BK Handique takes oath as cabinet minister

Assam Congress leader and Jorhat MP Bijoy Krishna Handique is one of the cabinet ministers who took oath as cabinet minister in the Manmohan Singh’s new cabinet.

Handique, the sixth time MP from Jorhat Lok Sabha seat has been elevated this time from the minister of state for chemicals and fertilizer. The veteran Congress leader, the son of Krishna Kanta Handique was born on December 1, 1934.

He cleared his post graduate studies at Calcutta University. In 1973, Handique was elected as Jorhat Congress committee president and also was in the stint as a member of AICC(I) from 1973 to 1991. In 1972, Handique was elected to the Assam Legislative Assembly. During 1974-1977, he was in the stints of Chairman of Estimates Committee, Assam Legislative Assembly, Chairman, Inquiry Committee on Assam State Electricity Board and Member, Committee on Government Assurances, Assam Legislative Assembly.

Thereafter from 1980 to 1986, he was elected to the Rajya Sabha and in 1991 he was elected to 10th Lok Sabha and in this stint he was the member of Consultative Committee, Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Committee on Official Language, Committee on External Affairs and the Committee on Food and Civil Supplies.

In 1996, he was re-elected to 11th Lok Sabha. During this period, he was a member with the committee on external affairs. Handique was elected to the Lok Sabha for the third time in 1998 where he headed the Railway Convention Committee and a member of the committee on industry and the Consultative Committee. He was again elected to the 13th Lok Sabha in 1999. For the fifth time, he was re-elected to 14th Lok Sabha. This is for the sixth term he was elected to the 15 th Lok Sabha.

It is a great pride for all of us that Mr. Handique is going to be cabinet minister. Hope, this time Mr Handique will be concentrate the problems happening in Assam and try to solve it. Because it is very unfortunate that very few people in central that who shows keen interest to Assam and it's problem. It is fact that without development of Assam INDIA never be a complete developped.

A Guwahati based organization takes on Chief minister and APSC alleging bribe in the examination held to select the candidates for ACS, APS and allied services. The officials of the Peoples'Welfare Forum lodged an FIR at Basistha police station against chief minister Tarun Gogoi and APSC chairman Rakesh Paul charging the duo to have taken bribe from a section of candidates to ensure their success in the competitive examination. Gogoi on Friday said that RTI is available to get the doubts cleared. The organization staged dharna in front of APSC office premises on Saturday raising bribery allegations.
