Atleast 300 vilages with over 15,000 population are reeling under waters as the Brahmaputra is flowing above the danger level in Lakhimpur district. The situation took a grim turn on Wednesday as the mighy river breached he 100-metre stretch of the state-of-the art Matmora embankment which was constructed using the geo-fabric technology at a cost of Rs 140 crore in Dhakuwakhana. The worst hit areas include Dhakuakhana, Matmore, Kherkota, Dangdhara, Dimoruguri, Kekuri and Dholpeta gaon panchayats inundated by flood water foricng the authorities to sound a red alert in the Upper Assam district.
Notably, the Brahmaputra is overflowing following the incessent rainfall in the past 36 areas in the catchment areas. Lakhimpur district administration sounded the red alert and deployed BSF personnel for rescue operation.
Meanwhile, Flood Control department sources said that an enquiry will be ordered as to how the embankment built by a internationally reputed Malaysian company for a stretch of five km was washed away.

It should be other way round. There needs an enquiry as to why the so called "Flood Control Department" exists...the organisation makes the already dismal scenario even more hopeless.

To be frank, I am frustrated with the performance of our so called government. Last year same Lakhimpur district was facing severe flood, due to opening of some dam in Arunachal; this year it is the “state-of-art Matmora dyke”. This is what we the people of Lakhimpur are left with. To rescue ourselves from flood every year, as if have no other work. I don’t understand what actually the people who are responsible do? Be it the government, or be it the bureaucracy. Is it not the time, the no-performing boards “Bhramaputra Board” or the “Flood Control Department” scrapped; and a new committee/organization with new people who are responsible being given charge? Waiting with a hope.

Stung by incessant criticism, Dispur police grilled Congress MLA Eanmul Haque in connection with a huge Rs 270 crore scam in irrigation department a month after a senior accounts officer committed suicide blaming Haque who was OSD when the scam took place.
Haque arrived in the Dispur before police station at 9 in the evening on Sunday where he was grilled for nearly three hours. The Congress MLA is understood to have made some startling revelations during his interrogation. His name surfaced after head accountant Mothur Chandra Nath hanged himself at his residence leaving a suicide note blaming it all on the MLA. Altogether six persons died and 12 others have been injured when a passenger vehicle collided its head on a truck in Goalpara district of Assam on Sunday. The tragic accident took place at Paharkata area in the morning when it collided head on a speeding truck coming from the opposite side. Six persons travelling in the winger dead on the spot. All the 12 injured persons have been rushed to the hospital. Five of the deceased were identified as Syed Zaman, Safia Begum, Safiul Alam, Firajuddin Ahmed and Hakim Ali.

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Sunday said that proper education should be implemented from the grassroot level.In his keynote address at the Pan IIT Global Conference 2012 Science City Auditorium in Kolkata on Sunday, he exhorted the IITians to work for the development of society.
Gogoi said that technical knowledge of IITians has to be duly provided without which social development would come to a grinding halt. He said that Dispur has taken various steps to deal firmly with terrorism and other terror tactics.
Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said that overall the situation BTAD area was under control and that there was no influx of people from the state to West Bengal. Deputy Chief of Bodoland Territorial Council Kampa Borgayari said that immigration was politically motivated and supported by religious extremist forces. In his address at a seminar in Delhi on Saturday, he said that there were many laws in force in the country but none of them have been able to deter or stop the illegal migration. President of Bodo Women's Justice Forum Anjali Daimari urged the people to come out together to fight the problem of illegal migration.
