Wild tuskers kill another in Udalguri district

The man elephant conflict in Udalguri district has taken critical turn following the death of another man and destruction of three houses by wild tuskers during last two days. According to information received ,two wild tuskers had killed one Nur Hussain (45) son of Abul Ali of Telipara village 2 km from Hatigarh TE at 6 pm on September 9. The incident occurred at section No. 13 while the deceased was walking on the road. The very next night on September 10, wild tuskers ( two in number ) destroyed three houses belonged to –Urmila Goawala, Charan Singh and Sultan Ali at Khoirajungle ( Bangshipur ) village near Hatigarh TE at 1 am. People of the locality alleged that no civil and forest officials had visited them till morning of September 11 except Chakra Choudhury, Officer i/c.Harisinga police out post. Angry villagers told this correspondent that they would come to street to launch agitation if government failed to take immediate action to stop man elephant conflict in Udalguri district. According to them government must provide immediate relief and rehabilitation to the effected people. They also said with regret that when an elephant was dead , civil, police and forest officials including print and electronic media personals rushed in; but when people were killed or their houses destroyed, nobody could spare time to attend.


In the meantime Green Valley Forest & Wildlife Protection Society, (a Nonaipara based NGO ,engaged in the conservation activities) has condoled the death of the man at Hatigarh. The NGO alleged that although two anti depredation squads ( one at Hatigarh TE and another at Koramore TE ) had been formed by the civil and forest administration; but the squads had not been seen launching any programmes to end the conflict.
