Arms recoverd at Furkating Junction

Railway Police at Furkating Junction in Golaghat District recovered two 9 mm pistols and a grenade from a Moriani bound train on Friday night. The train which was coming from New Jalpaiguri, enters Furkating Junction at 9.55 pm. When Railway Police entered the compartments for routine check-up, on suspicion they interrogated a passenger named Sakti Danda Singh belonging to Chelenhat in Jorhat District. The latter fled the place leaving behind his bag from where the police recovered the arms. After some time the police managed to arrest the absconding Mr. Singh from under a culvert. He was taken to Mariani for further investigation.

Boiling border in Gelekey: attack in tea gardens

After Golaghat, the Assam-Nagaland border in Sivasagar district is on the boil these days. The epicentre is Gelekey where Naga miscreants resumed reign of terror. Suspected Naga miscreants set on fire five houses in the tea gardens on Wednesday three days after a villager was shot dead at the paddy field in Golaghat.

The incident took place at Singibeel area in the wee hours where the miscreants who sneaked into the area from across the inter state border and burnt down seven houses full of green tea leaves. Security forces rushed to the spot but by then the miscreants disappeared.

The incident took place three days after the miscreants opened fire at a group of villagers in Ratanpur n Golaghat distrct when they were harvesting crops in the paddy field. One of the villagers died while four others are still undergoing treatment.        

These incidents have forced the security forces to fan in the nook and corner of the border areas in search of the miscreants who have been mongering trouble for the last couple of days.

 

PCG member Hiranya Saikia released on bail

The Gauhati High Court on Monday granted bail to Peoples’ Consultative Group member Hiranya Saikia, who was arrested for ULFA link. According to information, the bail order came up when the court was hearing a bail petition moved on behalf of Saikia, Mr Saikia was also booked under the National Security Act. Saikia was second PCG member to have been arrested by police for ULFA link. The first one was Lachit Bordoloi who was also booked under NSA.

Namrup: A skill development workshop drew huge response in Namrup after the Institution of Engineers  India -Upper Assam Local Centre organized it on Monday.

Organized jointly with Namrup Town Committee, the workshop was presided over Chandrama Baruah, a noted Northeastern  fashion designer. In her speech she  said, "through this skill developing workshop on Tailoring where every women can do work for their self respect earning. "

Around 22 candidates participated and the number of participators are expected to increase in a day or two since many encouraging women are in touch with the organizers.
