The Electronic Media Forum Assam (EMFA) has expressed its concern over the ongoing controversy on a social networking site (SNS) and its implications on media persons as a whole in the State. Some illicit comments in the SNS account of a Guwahati based news channel editor have sparked a series of protests in the last few days through out the Brahmaputra valley of Assam. In some occasions, few television reporters (and camerapersons) of a particular channel are being targeted by the agitators.
The EMFA appeals to the civil society groups ‘not to physically target the field reporters and camera persons in any situation’.
In a press release, issued by the EMFA on Tuesday evening, the organization argues that the viewer/ audience/ readers have every right to express their resentments against any news channel or other media houses, and they may go for legal actions against such groups. ‘But the reporter and camerapersons should not be targeted personally as they are only performing their duties under the guidelines of the respective new channels,’ the release asserted. The EMFA also urges the managements of the concerned media groups to resolve the issue amicably at the earliest for the greater interest of journalism in particular and the Assamese society in general.
