Award winning litterateur Mamoni Raisom Goswami passed away on Tuesday. The end for the Jnyanpith award winner came at around 7-30 in the morning at the Guwahati Medical College Hospital where she was undergoing treatment for the last several months.
The Assamese editor, poet, professor, scholar and writer was born in 1942 in Shillong. She was a celebrated name in the Assamese literary world.
She is the second Assamese recipient of the Jnanpith Award, the highest literary award in the year 2000.
Dr Goswami received the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1982, the Jnanpith Award in 2000 and is the country’s first Principal Prince Claus Laureate in 2008.
A few years back, she played the role of a peace negotiator in the ULFA-government peace talk. Later, ULFA elected her as the PCG member. Thousands of her fans rushed to the GMCH as soon as the sad news was spearing like wildfire.

A great loss to the literery world and a huge setback to the assamese culture. November 2011 has taken away from us two most distinguished and illustrious persons. It is almost impossible to fill up the void created on account of the sad demise of Dr. Bhupen Hazarika and Mamoni Raisom Goswami. May the almighty God grant eternal peace to the departed souls.

A major incident of blast was averted when Assam Rifles recovered two powerful improvised explosive devises from a bus at Dhekiajuli in Sonitpur district on Wednesday.According to information, acting on specific inputs, the 44 Assam Rifles personnel recovered the bomb from a private bus coming here from Orang around 11 am. The two explosives were safely defused by the jawans, the sources said. This is the second one case of bomb recovery this week. Earlier on Monday, a major disaster was averted when a powerful bomb kept by suspected ULFA was recovered from a Guwahati-Nalbari private long-distance bus in Nalbari district's Borkura.
Barely a few hours after the killing of 6 NDFB cadres during an encounter in Karbi Anglong, unidentified miscreants gunned down four persons of a same family of a Congress ward commissioner in Diphu on Tuesday.According to information, armed miscreants stormed into the residence of Congress ward commissioner Apu Das and gunned down Apu's wife Manju Das, two daughters and a home tutor at around 7-45 in the evening. Six NDFB rebels were killed during a heavy gun battle with army in Karbi Anglong district on Tuesday.According to information, the encounter took place at Donghap area in the hills district on Tuesday morning. After weeks of will-they-won't-they, police have arrested Bokakhat MLA Jiten Gogoi who have physically assaulted a forest official two months back at the Kaziranga National Park.Gogoi was arrested a day after the Gauhati High Court has rejected his anticipatory bail plea he moved after police initiated action to arrest him.
