Award winning litterateur Mamoni Raisom Goswami passed away on Tuesday. The end for the Jnyanpith award winner came at around 7-30 in the morning at the Guwahati Medical College Hospital where she was undergoing treatment for the last several months.


The Assamese editor, poet, professor, scholar and writer was born in 1942 in Shillong. She was a celebrated name in the Assamese literary world.


She is the second Assamese recipient of the Jnanpith Award, the highest literary award in the year 2000.


Dr Goswami received the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1982, the Jnanpith Award in 2000 and is the country’s first Principal Prince Claus Laureate in 2008.


A few years back, she played the role of a peace negotiator in the ULFA-government peace talk. Later, ULFA elected her as the PCG member. Thousands of her fans rushed to the GMCH as soon as the sad news was spearing like wildfire.

A great loss to the literery world and a huge setback to the assamese culture. November 2011 has taken away from us two most distinguished and illustrious persons. It is almost impossible to fill up the void created on account of the sad demise of Dr. Bhupen Hazarika and Mamoni Raisom Goswami. May the almighty God grant eternal peace to the departed souls.

Latobam death toll reaches 9

The death toll in the Latubam tea estate’s hooch tragedy has reached nine on Monday a day after 8 died after consuming spurious country liquor. This has forced the Dibrugarh district administration to order a magisterial inquiry into the incident.Sources told Assam Times, six persons, including a woman, died in a hospital and three others were brought dead. Sonitpur: 5 militants killed in encounter

Three NDFB rebels were killed along with two MULTA militants at an encounter in Sonitpur district of Assam on Monday morning.According to information, these rebels locked in a fierce gun battle with the troops of the Red Horns division in the wee hours at Akabasti near Balipara in the central Assam district. 8 dead after consuming liquor

In yet another tragic incident of consuming liquor, altogether eight persons died after consuming poisonous country liquor on Sunday in Dibriugarh district.According to information, the incident took place at the Latoban Tea Estate, near Tingkhang.
