'Bhut jolokia is the world's hottest chilli

New Delhi: We all remember it. The moms and the aita’s used to talk about it in the kitchen. “Bhut jolokia or 'ghost chillies' of Tezpur figure has found a mention in the Time Magazine's latest issue as the world's hottest chilli.
The magazine's cover story that takes a look at the culinary specialities and peculiarities around the world has zeroed in on the burnt orange pods, developed in a military laboratory in Tezpur, as packing the deadliest punch.

The article on 'Global Warming' notes that the bhut jolokia, also called the Naga chilli, carries the sort of heat that one normally would find only in the hottest chilli sauces made from pure pepper extract.

As you have mentioned that Naga -Chili is developed at DRL , Tezpur , rather it has been tested there and claimed for the first time that it is the world's hottest chili. Finally New Maxico state University( Chile Pepper Institute ) brought it into lime light.

The BHUT of Bhut Jalakia is not GHOST. It is actually BHOOT meaning Hill Peaple of North, specifically the people of present day Arunachal Pradesh. And the name Naga Chili is seldom used.

In tezpur we call it "Bih Jalokia".....everybody says it this way....

Bhut jolokia/naga jolokia is the future crop of the north east. We are doing commercial bhut jolokia cultivation at various site of Assam.

BHUT of bhut jolokia meaning ghost (READERS DIGEST)??.. A BIT CONFUSING. Anyway this is one of the profitable crop for our farmers. ASSAM BHOOT JOLOKIA should get GSI.

We should immediately apply for GI or else we will lose. This is an indigeneous product and only Assam should benifit. We should encourage only son of soil Assamese growers, promoters and buyers. Same with Joha.

when I was Sr.Manager of a Tea garden in upper assam I used the pickle of bhoot jolokia rather the oil to deter Green leaf theives (which was a menacein upper Assam gardens)on my own way and got the tittle "Jolokia sahab" from the villegers.Stil we are growing in our kitchen garden and best use the pickle during summer.

I was at TGIF last eve & had my first opportunity to taste Red JOLOKIA Paste on my chicken wings, though it won me a free pint but I am definitely not going to repeat that. However would like to try out green Jolokia sometime.

Brisk polling in progress: turn out crossed 50%

Altogether 85,09,011 voters are expected to decide on the fate of 485 candidates in 62 assembly constituencies in Assam on Monday in the first phase of assembly polls. Assam Times special poll squad came to see huge queue of voters in front of polling booths after the polling began at 7 in the morning. Till 12 am the turn out is said to be 50 per cent. PM to visit Assam on ULFA Foundation Day

Prime minister Dr Manmohan Singh will visit Assam on April 7 to campaign for the party four days before the final phase of assembly polls slated for April 11. Talking to assamtimes, senior APCC leaders said on Sunday that Dr Singh is scheduled to attend a series of poll rallies. The Ulfa would also observe theis foundation day forcing the authorities to go for a massive security arrangement on that day.Dr Singh would be followed by Congress president Sonia Gandhi who would visit the state on April 8. Amid a massive security bandobast, Assam is all set to go to the first phase of assembly polls on Monday. The first phase would decide the fate of altogether 62 candidates out of 362 aspirants where altogether , 8,50,9011 would exercise their franchise from 7 in the morning in 11,264 booths. Campign ends for phase 1 poll

Amid a total and peaceful statewide bandh the campaign for the first phase of assembly polls ended at 5 on Saturday evening. The polling will take place on Monday from 7 in the morning. This phase will cover altogether 64 constituencies. On the other hand, amid tight security polling officials have reached the booths they were deployed. Top ranked police and paramilitary officers are constantly monitoring the preparations. All the voters are set to get slips before casting their votes.

Manmohan Singh visits Assam
