Sngi Lum Lang - Jaintia festival celebrated

The ‘SNGI LUM LANG’ festival of Jaintias residing in Dima Hasao District of Assam is celebrated at Jatinga Village on January 7th with traditional fervor and gaiety.


This ‘SNGI LUM LANG’ is celebrated here at Jatinga with the aim of revival of culture, customs and culture of the Jaintias after a long gap of seven decades as this had been celebrated till 1936 since they embraced the Christianity and some opined that celebration of such festival was wastage of time. In 1999, Late H. Rupsi had held a meeting of all the Jaintia Gaon Buras of Dima Hasao to discuss on the celebration of this festival but it was not materialized at that time but with the active initiative of Sri Debojit Thaosen, Chief Executive Member, Dima Hasao Autonomous Council and Executive Member Moril Masa and others this has come to an effect this year.


The Chief Executive Member, Dima Hasao Autonomous Council Sri Debojit Thaosen graced the occasion as the Chief Guest while the Chief Executive Member, Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council Sri L. Sumer attended as the guest of honour. They were felicitated with jaintia traditional scurf and bouquet of flowers.


The Chief Guest Sri Debojit Thaosen hoisted the flag in presence of huge gatherings.


This was followed by welcome song, traditional dances by small children and the youths; this was followed by traditional games and sports which included archery.



Sri L. Sumer, Chief Executive Member, Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council expressed his satisfaction over the positive attitude of the Dima Hasao Autonomous Council (DHAC) towards the minority community living in the district by declaring holiday on the occasion of ‘SNGI LUM LANG’. While offering his heartfelt thanks Sri L. Sumer congratulated Debojit Thaosen the Chief Executive Member, Dima Hasao Autonomous Council.


Earlier, Flemimg Rupsi Gaon Bura, Jatinga village explained the significance of the festival. Rupsi further said aim of this festival was to reatain their culture, custom and tradition.


Sri Debojit Thaosen, CEM, DHAC in his speech stressed on preservation of culture, custom and tradition while appealing the people of Jatinga to save the birds during the birds phenomenon at Jatinga.

Rail communication yet to restore between Lower Haflong and Badarpur

The Rail communication between Lower Haflong and Badarpur, Hill section of N F Railway which was disrupted from June 3 last due to heavy landslide along with shrinkage between Mailongdisa and Harangajao caused by continuous rain on Saturday night is yet to be restored. Haflong boys make Dima Hasao proud

Haflong boys brought laurel to Dima Hasao by securing 1st and 7th position in HS Examination -2012. Sankhya Chakraborty son of Sri Jagannath Chakraborty and Sumita Chakraborty and Rajshekhar Nath son Rajat Nath and Susmita Chakarborty Nath of Haflong. Umrangso kidnapping accused nabbed

Militants nabbed

Acting on tip off Langting Police apprehended three suspected cadres of Dimasa National Revolutionary Front (DNRF) from Lungding Phonglo village between Manderdisa and Hatikhali near Maibang on Tueday at 8.30 PM. They are identified as Naren Basumatari-19, Surajit Hagjer--20, Samar Daolagupu – 22 of Hatikhali. Three numbers 9mm pistol, ammunition and some incriminating documents were recovered from them. Minor died after rape at Haflong

Tension prevails at Maibang and Haflong following death of a minor girl of Class VIII of allegedly after she was raped by her local guardian Abhijit @ Bablu Hasnu aged 45 years a 4rth grade employee of Maibang Civil Sub-Division Office on Sunday at about 7.30 PM.
