Award to Ajit Baruah

The Nijara Kavi Sailadhar Rajkhowa Memorial Award committee has selected eminent Assamese Poet and Critic Ajit Baruah for the 2007 Nijara Kavi Sailadhar Rajkhowa Memorial Award.

The award, instituted to keep the memory of Sailadhar Rajkhowa alive and to acknowledge the contribution made in the field of Assamese verse or drama, carries Rs.12,000 in cash and a citation.

The award will be presented to Baruah on December 17.

9 held, 30 packs of heroin seized

9 persons identified as Muziboor Rahman,Abdul kamal Jalil,Saidul Rahman belong to Aajad Nagar and Mahmood Hussain,Phajar Ali, and Noor Mahamaad of Shilongni were held by Nagaon police on March 6 from Chalchali , a sub-urban area of Nagaon, for their involvement in heroin business.The police also arrested Phasar Ali,Imdadul Islam and Anowar Hussain and seized 30 packs of heroin,each contains 1 gram, from their possession meant for sale among the teenagers, youths of Nagaon.The team of the police was led by Addl. Brajawala Devi passes away

Brajawala Devi, the wife of the doyen of Assamese literature Jagneshwar Sharmapassed away at 9 o'clock in the morning at her Amolapatty residence in Nagaon on March 4 after an old-age illness. She was 88. She was born in 1920 at Dakshinpat Satra and got married to the literatur, scholar Jagneshwar Sharma at the age of 13. She wrote a book named 'Parijaat' on the marriage system of the Assamese Society. She too composed several plays and amongst them 'Sapoon' introduced her as a skillful play writer to the state. Timber seized at Dharamtul

In a mission led by Forest officer Mustafa Ahmed, Dharamtul range in Morigaon district, seized a mini truck As-02 C 5347 at Dohali carrying high quality timber worth about 50,000 in the wee hours on February 28. The driver of the truck managed to escape from the spot, sources said.

Boat mishap, 3 killed

Three persons were killed when a country boat carrying seven persons of a marriage party capsized on the river Kopilee near Baha-Parghat in Morigaon district yesterday. According to information, The accident took place in the wee hours.

Ganja seized

The police personals of Nagaon recently seized eight sacks full of Manipuri ganja from a farmhouse owned by one Ali, located at Garaimari.The police also seized three light motor vehicles that were used to carry the consignments. The team of the police was led by Mujibur Rahman,Addl SP of Nagaon. According to police, the consignment was supposed to be transported to Guwahati.

Bandh affects life in Nagaon

The normal life was affected by a dawn- to- dusk bandh called by the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) in protest against the arrest of MASS activist Lachit Bordoloi and fake encounters in the state.Markets were closed,shutters of shops were down ,educational institutions, State and Central Governtment offices were remain closed.No vehicles were plying on the road.The NH-37 looked deserted during the Bandh.

Two held, arms recovered

Nagaon Police last night arrested two youth in connection with keeping some illegal arms and ammunitions with them. The two were arrested from Dhakkapatti area of Nagaon. According to Police, one 9 mm pistol was recovered from their possession. The two persons were identified as Sunil Sharma and Balu Yadab.

Minister runs after Commission

In a press conference, during his visit, held at Jungal-Balahu Garh Fishery Farm at Raha, in Nagaon district,on January 23, the Fishery Minister Nur Zamal Sarkar made it clear that the Fishery College of Raha will be shifted to Kachmari, a sub-urban area of Nagaon district shortly and all official arrengements for the said purpose have been completed.
