Assam players won golds at the International Invitation Karate Championship 2013 held at University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka on June 9.

The winners are Manjit Dihingia – 2 Golds, Raju Kachari – 1 Gold, Dipu Tanti – 1 Gold and Sushmita Paul – 1 Gold.

Karbi Anglong police have arrested 5 miscreants from Nagaland when after they allegedly set on fire 7 houses on Friday night.According to information, a group of miscreants from the neighbouring state arrived in a tiny village atop Rongapahar near Doldoli at night.Apart from blank firing to unleash terror among the villagers, they set afire 7 houses forcing the police to step in.Apart from tightening patrolling in the area, police arrested 5 miscreants and charged them with terrorizing and attacking the local residents.      
Poachers are believed to have been targeting a rhino in Jorhat district after it strayed out of Kaziranga on Friday.The animal struck attention of the local villagers at an open paddy field at Jhanjimuk in Teok area on Friday afternoon.But a section of the local residents told Assam Times that they came to see three poachers following the animal. Three persons of a family had a narrow escape when a ravaging fire engulfed their house in Guwahati on Friday.The incident took place at Satribari area near Paltonbazar where the fire---believed to have been originated from an incense stick spread rapidly in the midnight.SDRF team arrived in the spot and rescued the family members demolishing the walls and windows. Four fire tenders took three hours to bring the situation under control.
Tezpur Congress candidate Bhupen Borah, his BJP  counterpart R P Sarma filed nominations on Friday.The duo filed nominations before the returning officer flanked by their supporters in the afternoon. BJP is all set to announce its candidate for Koliabor seat in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.Talking to reporters in Lakhimpur on Friday, BJP state unit president Sarbananda Sonowal said that the party is in a process to finalise the candidate to take on Gaurav Gogoi in a day or two.But he said that the candidate would be strong enough to overpower Congress candidate Gaurav Gogoi, who happens to be the chief minister’s son.  
Caught in a dilemma, Congress has yet to announce the candidate for Mongoldoi seat.The crucial seat has three top contenders and that’s why, the party’s poll panel finds it difficult to finalise it right now.According to sources, the announcement would be made in a day or two.Former MP Kirip Chaliha, Pranjeet Chaudhury, Madhab Rajbanshi are the three top contenders for the seat.
The Gauhati High Court on Friday fixed March 19 as the date of hearing of an anticipatory bail plea moved by Kamal Medhi in connection with the recent self immolation of a KMSS activist in Dispur.The court, however, granted interim bail to Dhorya Konwar and Amal Bezbaruah who have been booked by Dispur police. But their bail would be applicable till March 19.   
Gauhati High Court will hear Akhil Gogoi’s bail petition on March 19.The petition moved in the court on Friday. But it fixed March 19 as the date of hearing of Gogoi’s plea who has been in judicial custody after five days of police custody in connection with the recent self immolation of a KMSS activist in Dispur.The court fixed the date of hearing last week. But the counselor applied for more time to appear on behalf of the KMSS president who was arrested in connection with the self immolation of Pranab Boro.
AGP is in a mood to withdraw suspension against Padma Hazarika. But the request should come from the Sootea MLA.Several senior party leaders openly discussed the withdrawal of suspension order against Hazarika. He was Birendra Prasad Baishya, who on Friday openly stressed withdrawal of the action.On Thursday, former party president Brindabon Goswami urged the leadership to withdraw the against the MLA.In his response, president Prafulla Kumar Mahanta said that the request should come from Hazarika for the same.Hazarika was suspended in February 7 alleging that he refused to toe on the party line in the Rajya Sabha polls.
