JK Borgohain passes away

Veteran journalist, prolific writer and socio economic and political analyst Jatindra Kumar Borgohain passed away on Wednesday following a brief illness.

Borgohain died two died at the Hayat Hospital at around 2-50 in the afternoon two days after he was rushed to it following a serious ailment. Despite best “possible” treatment, he failed to recuperate. He was 72.

Borgohain, who hailed from Jakhalabandha area in Nagaon district started his career of service as an assistant professor of economics in JB College. In 1992, he came to Guwahati and joined as editor wioth a vernacular daily. Since then, he served several media houses. He further joined as  editor in chief with a city based news channel.  A pall of gloom descended as soon as the news of his demise spread like wild fire.

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi along with many other political and non political leadersand organizations expressed deep shock at his demise.

A two year old video clip showing conversation of Union home minister Rajnath Singh with NBBUSS president Soobodh Biswas on Assam’s illegal settlers seems to have created no less controversy across the state. Biswas, the most wanted in the Silapothar clash alleged untold misery of the Hindu Bangladeshi immigrants in Assam. He apprised Rajnath Singh, who was flanked by Nitin Gadkari of the inhuman torture inflicted on the Hindu immigrants by the Assam government inside the detention camp. But the allegations were totally brushed aside by the then government. This has once again proved Biswas’ close association with the NDA government at the Centre.

ULFA(I) confirms patch up with CoreCom

ULFA (I) on Thursday vowed to continue it's good relation with CORCOM rebels in Manipur suggesting more joint strike in the two north eastern states.In a joint statement released to mark ULFA (I)’s Army Day, chairman Abhijeet Asom and commander in chief Paresh Baruah said the people belonging to both the states are united.The duo said that the Operation Barak launched with the help of CORECOM put the army chief in flutter forcing him to rush to Tepur.The statement suggested ULFS(I)’s joint armed struggle and strike with CoreCom for the days to come.

AGP dharna against BJP!

With a day long protest across the state on Thursday, the Asom Gana Parishad in rank and file have shown that even after being a coalition partner, the regional party will oppose the move to grant citizenship to the illegal Hindu settlers.Party leaders and workers in the district and sub divisional headquarters thronged in large number and staged protest  against the amendment of the Indian Citizenship Act, 1955.The AGP leaders further slammed the BJP-led government for the failure to nab Soobodh Biswas, the main culprit behind the Silapothar clash where a section of protestirs ransacked a local AASU office.

Dhemaji police have extracted many vital clues suggesting the safe escape of Soobodh Biswas, the main culprit behind the Silapothar clash where some a local AASU office was vandalized last week.These sensational revelations surfaced when police interrogated a person who confessed to have helped the NBBUSS president escape from Silapothar hours after the clash.He revealed before the police how he ferried Biswas at a boat on the river on March 10.Delhi, Nagpur, West Bengal police are on alert in view of the incident where the main culprit could be hiding.

New Manipur CM takes oath

Senior political leader T Biren Singh took oath as Manipur Chief minister at a function in Imphal on Wednesday. Governor Dr Najma Heptulla administered him the oath of office and secrecy at the Raj Bhawan in presence of many BJP leaders.BJP president Amit Shah could not attend the function because of unavoidable reasons. Assam minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, HRD minister Prakash Javadekar, senior leader Ram Madhab also attended the ceremony.Despite 21 seats, BJP formed the government with the support of NPP, NPF, TMC and the lone independent candidate.

No fatwa against Nahid

Amid an escalating protest in Assam over an Islamic fatwa in Hojai, local Muslim clerics denied any diktat against Nahid Afrid.Talking to Assam Times over telephone from Hojai, Muslim leaders said that no where in the leaflet they have asked Nahid to refrain from any performance.According to them, one after another cultural functions have been disrupting quietness in the area. Dozens of Islamic outfits served a diktat against stage performance by Muslim girls and women triggering huge statewide protest a couple of days ahead of a function in Hojai where Nahid Afrin is invited.In its fatwa, these organization without naming Nahid, said that stage performance by girls and women is contrary to Islamic tradition which should remain in force.Many singers, parties, organizations and individuals have openly come out opposing the diktat saying that these outfits should be rein in to avoid the impending backlash.The budding talent fell disappointed as soon as she came to know the diktat as she was busy for her performance at Udali in Hojai.
