JK Borgohain passes away

Veteran journalist, prolific writer and socio economic and political analyst Jatindra Kumar Borgohain passed away on Wednesday following a brief illness.

Borgohain died two died at the Hayat Hospital at around 2-50 in the afternoon two days after he was rushed to it following a serious ailment. Despite best “possible” treatment, he failed to recuperate. He was 72.

Borgohain, who hailed from Jakhalabandha area in Nagaon district started his career of service as an assistant professor of economics in JB College. In 1992, he came to Guwahati and joined as editor wioth a vernacular daily. Since then, he served several media houses. He further joined as  editor in chief with a city based news channel.  A pall of gloom descended as soon as the news of his demise spread like wild fire.

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi along with many other political and non political leadersand organizations expressed deep shock at his demise.

The United Liberation Front of Asom (I) has warned the people to stay away from Margherita BJP candidate Bhaskar Sarma in the run up to the Assam assembly polls. In a statement issued by Aronodoy Asom on Tuesday, the rebel outfit said that the people of Assam should not work at the instance of BJP who has fielded Sarma, who presided over the gory secret killing cases which came to an end end only in April 2001. The rebel outfit earlier asked BJP not to field Sarma.

FINER has welcomed the recent Supreme Court judgment providing major relief to the north eastern industries. In a statement issued in Guwahati on Saturday, the business chamber said that the judgment would end an ambiguity. A division bench of the Supreme Court comprising  Justice Kurian Joseph and Justice Rohinton Fali Nariman dismissed the revenue’s appeal against the judgment of Gauhati High Court allowing tax exemption on operational subsidies. An escalating resentment over poll pact with AGP and the first of candidates threaten to mar BJP's prospect for the upcoming assembly polls scheduled on April 4 and April 11. Local BJP leaders and workers have hit the streets in many places opposing the poll pact with the regional party whom they think the people have dumped a decade back. Electronic Media Forum Assam (Emfa) has urged the election authority of India for proving the facility of postal ballots for the city based media persons during the forthcoming Assam Legislative Assembly election, scheduled for April 4 and 11 respectively. The city based Dispur Hospitals Pvt. Ltd will observe the World Kidney Day on 10 March 2016 at its complex in Ganeshguri, Guwahati-781006. Stunned by the Jorhat incident the authorities have suspended inspector of school, Sankardev Seminary HS School principal. SEBA secretary Kamaljyoti Gogoi has also received a show cause notice in connection with the incident where thousands of HSLC examination answer sheets were gutted in fire.
