JK Borgohain passes away

Veteran journalist, prolific writer and socio economic and political analyst Jatindra Kumar Borgohain passed away on Wednesday following a brief illness.

Borgohain died two died at the Hayat Hospital at around 2-50 in the afternoon two days after he was rushed to it following a serious ailment. Despite best “possible” treatment, he failed to recuperate. He was 72.

Borgohain, who hailed from Jakhalabandha area in Nagaon district started his career of service as an assistant professor of economics in JB College. In 1992, he came to Guwahati and joined as editor wioth a vernacular daily. Since then, he served several media houses. He further joined as  editor in chief with a city based news channel.  A pall of gloom descended as soon as the news of his demise spread like wild fire.

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi along with many other political and non political leadersand organizations expressed deep shock at his demise.

MULTA militant held in Dhubri

Nagaland blocks SMS, Internet

Caught in an escalating protest against killing of Syed Farid Khan in Dimapur on Friday, Nagaland on Sunday blocked SMS and internet to disallow violence from spreading in the interstate border.Official sources told Assam Times that the SMS and internet services have been blocked for 36 hours. They observed that SMS and internet have been fuelling the agitation in the Assam-Nagaland interstate border areas.The SMS and internet would resume only at 6 in the evening on Monday. If need be, the authority would extend the period, they said.

8 more held on Farid killing case

The number of youths arrested in connection with the Dimapur incident has gone up to 14. Senior police officials told Assam Times that eight more youths were held after identifying them in video footage on Saturday night from various places in the town. No let up in truckers’ logjam

An undeclared economic blockade against Nagaland continues to disrupt the supply of essential commodities in the neighbouring state.Hundreds of trucks bound for Nagaland have been remaining stranded along the interstate border in Karbi Anglong, Jorhat and Sivasagar district plunging the state into yet another period of crisis.Talking to Assam Times the truckers said that they won’t let anything go to Nagaland unless justice is ensured to Farid who was killed in mob attack.“We don’t know when we will resume the supply of essential commodities. Dimapur incident; 6 held

Nagaland police have arrested six youths in connection with the Dimapur incident where a rape accused died in mob attack.Senior police officials told Assam Times that six youths were held after identifying them in video footage. Lifeless Farid reaches home

Amid utter shock and anger, the government on Saturday handed over lifeless Syed Farid Khan to is family members a day after the businessman was lynched in mob attack in Dimapur.The special helicopter arranged by the Assam government carrying the body landed in Karimganj to be received by the bereaved family members in the after noon.Khan’s brothers arrived Karbi Anglong district bordering Nagaland on Friday evening to bring back the body. The district authorities have appealed to the people to exercise restraint.

Rape allegation false!

Simmering protest against Nagaland

Amid simmering tension along the Assam-Nagaland border over 20 organizations  are continuing protest the recent killing of an Assamese trader in Dimapur who was a rape accused.Protesters in Karbi Anglong told Assam Times that they would not bend until and unless the victim gets justice. “Why they should kill Khan who was an accused only. We want a high level probe,” said Jatin Watson in Diphu who has joined the dharna.“How the mob managed to stormed into the heavily guarded Dimapur Central jail. Really, the security forces deployed inside and outside the jail have handed Khan over to the mob,” said Kaberi Rongpi.
