JK Borgohain passes away

Veteran journalist, prolific writer and socio economic and political analyst Jatindra Kumar Borgohain passed away on Wednesday following a brief illness.

Borgohain died two died at the Hayat Hospital at around 2-50 in the afternoon two days after he was rushed to it following a serious ailment. Despite best “possible” treatment, he failed to recuperate. He was 72.

Borgohain, who hailed from Jakhalabandha area in Nagaon district started his career of service as an assistant professor of economics in JB College. In 1992, he came to Guwahati and joined as editor wioth a vernacular daily. Since then, he served several media houses. He further joined as  editor in chief with a city based news channel.  A pall of gloom descended as soon as the news of his demise spread like wild fire.

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi along with many other political and non political leadersand organizations expressed deep shock at his demise.

Cabinet reshuffle this week

Assam cabinet reshuffle is likely to take place this week. CM gets tougher with jihadis

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi said on Wednesday that the government will firmly deal with jihadi activists a day after Director General of police Khagen Sarma claimed to have found evidence of a section of youths undergoing arms training in Bangladesh.Addressing a press conference in Dispur, Gogoi called it a matter of national interest. He said that any individual involved in such activities would not be spared. But in the same breath he said that there would be no politics behind it and that no innocent people will be arrested in the name of religion.

Gogoi hints at amnesty for ULFA boss

In his renewed appeal to ULFA's anti talk faction, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Wednesday said that his government is all prepared for amnesty to Paresh Baruah, if the ULFA chief comes overground for talks.Addressing a press conference in Dispur, the chief minister said that if Baruah comes to fight the polls, would write to the Centre urging it to announce general amnesty. “Then he be able to do something for the people,” said the chief minister."Why don't you come back to fight for the people? You are free to form a political party and contest elections to prove that people support your causes,” Gogoi asked Baruah.

6 ULFA men held in Meghalaya

Security forces claimed to have held six dreaded ULFA militants near Goalpara district along the Assam-Meghalaya border on Wednesday.According to defence sources, the militants were captured at Pedaldoba in West Garo hills in the wee hours during a joint operation by Army Camp Lakhipur under the aegis of Red Horns Division and Meghalaya police.They were believed to have come to the area to carry out extortions in Goalpara district. Tiwa road blockade irks travelers

Normal surface communication on the National Highway No 37 came to a grinding halt on Wednesday in parts of Nagaon and Morigaon districts Tiwa students blocked the road demanding measures under the Sixth Schedule under the Constitution. Around 200 Tiwa students blocked the NH NO 37 at Dharamtul shouting slogans for the Sixth Schedule. Rifles snatched away in Kokrajhar

In yet another bizarre incident, suspected NDFB-S rebels snatched INSAS rifles from the security forces in Kokrajhar on Tuesday forcing a combing operation in the entire area.The incident took place at Khalashi area near Saralbangha river in the afternoon where the jawans of the ecological task force was on plantation duty.A group of militants who outnumbered the security forces reached the spot and took away at least 35 INSAS rifles at gunpoint. Jorhat teachers demand CBI probe

The Assam State Primary Teachers’ Association demands CBI probe into the killing of Dijendra Nath Gogoi at the school premises in Jorhat apart from giving 48 hours deadline to nab the miscreant.In a memorandum to chief minster Tarun Gogoi, a copy of which was sent to education minister Pradyut Bordoloi, the Jorhat unit of the Assam State Primary Teachers’ Association said the police have failed to arrest the gunmen therefore, it would be impossible for police to unearth the truth.They said that only a CBI probe would be able to identify the culprit who shot dead the headmaster of Namuna Bagan Lower Primary School at Borbheta under Lichubari police outpost.
