JK Borgohain passes away

Veteran journalist, prolific writer and socio economic and political analyst Jatindra Kumar Borgohain passed away on Wednesday following a brief illness.

Borgohain died two died at the Hayat Hospital at around 2-50 in the afternoon two days after he was rushed to it following a serious ailment. Despite best “possible” treatment, he failed to recuperate. He was 72.

Borgohain, who hailed from Jakhalabandha area in Nagaon district started his career of service as an assistant professor of economics in JB College. In 1992, he came to Guwahati and joined as editor wioth a vernacular daily. Since then, he served several media houses. He further joined as  editor in chief with a city based news channel.  A pall of gloom descended as soon as the news of his demise spread like wild fire.

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi along with many other political and non political leadersand organizations expressed deep shock at his demise.

CLP uncertain; dissidents turn pilgrims

The dissident Congress leaders skipped their visit to the governor after the AICC announced CLP meet  by May 28 to sort out the difference. Gogoi aides back to Guwahati

Amid the height of dissidence, the ministers and MLAs camping in New Delhi to lobby  for Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi have left the capital on Sunday. The senior ministers including Rockybul Hussain, Pradyut Bodoloi, Nilomoni Sen Deka left the national capital after Gogoi asked them to go back to Guwahati. Gogoi in a statement which is available to Assam Times made it clear that he had not invited anybody to New Delhi to lobby on his behalf. 

HS results on May 30

The stages are set. The Assam Higher Secondary Education Council is all set to announce the results of the HS examinations  on May 30. The council told Assam Times that the results of the examination conducted in February and March thus year would be available for the 2,60,000 candidates acorss the state at 10 in the morning. The results for arts, science and commerce streams would be available on www.ahsec.org from 10 in the morning. This is apart from the result booklets to be available for the schools and colleges in the district and sub divisional headquarters.    Notbly, the Board of Secondary Education, Assam will annunce the results of HSLC examinations on Wednesday...

NE student roughed up in Delhi

Racial discrimination towards the north east people refuses to die down in New Delhi where the students from the region have been bearing the brunt. In yet another case of racial discrimination in the capital, goons in New Delhi assaulted a Nagaland student at a court premises. The incident took place on Friday evening when the Naga student moved the Tis Hazari Court in protest against an incident on Thursday where a Naga girl was beaten up by the goons at a metro station in the capital. The North East Students association in New Delhi will chalk out a series of agitation to protest the recurrence of the incidents.

Trouble for dissident Congman

A sensational revelation seems to have generated no less heat within the Assam Congress these days. That too in the time of deepening dissidence within the Congress legislative body. Trouble seems to have brewed for a former Union minister who is believed to have been harbouring dissident activities in the state. The former union minister is one among the twenty political leaders who are accused of holding account in foreign bank. His name figures in a list submitted before the Supreme Court by senior leader Ram Jethmalani who charged him with stashing Rs 3,025 crores in foreign country. 4 killed in truck-bus collision

Four persons were killed at a tragic road mishap in Nagaon on Saturday. The accident took place when a vehicle carrying four persons collided its head on an ASTC passenger bus at Amguri in Kaliabor on the National Highway No 37 where the four passengers inside the Indica car were killed on the spot. They were identified as Prachurya Phukan, Latu Kalita, Mrinal Saikia.

No let up in dissidance drama

A soon to be convened Congress legislature party meet will deal with the deepening dissidance drama within the party.             According to sources, AICC is all set to send an observer this week to read the pulse of the dissident MLAs and minister.               Sources said that the party high command has asked senior leader Motilal Vora as central observer with a hope that he would restore stability in the Congress legislature party.                   This has forced the dissident lots remain silent till the CLP meet in Guwahati.

Top AGP body resigns en masse

The Asom Gana Parishad's top officials have resigned en masse. All leaders and officials of the regional party in the central committe resigned owning moral responsibility for the party's deplorable defeats in the recent Lok Sabha polls where the party couldnot open its account. Top leaders told Assam Times that the party would hold a huge convention soon to elect new leaders.

Sonia asks Gogoi to continue

Congress president Sonia Gandhi asked chief minister Tarun Gogoi to continue when the latter sought her permissiom to quit the office on Thursday.       Top AICC sources told Assam Times that Gandhi refused to read the letter after Gogoi handed over it to her.                  Gandhi was believed to have told Gogoi that he was required in both the party and the state.                Gogoi tendered his resignation owning moral responsibility for the party's defeat in the recent Lok Sabha poll where the ruling party managed to get only 3 seats out of 14.

Gogoi meets Sonia, resigns

Finally chief minister Tarun Gogoi put in his papers when he met Sonia Gandhi in New Delhi on Thursday.           After holding a series of crucial meetings with Rahul Gandhi, Dr CP Joshi and Ahmed Patel, Gogoi meet the party president and tendered his resignation owning moral responsiblity for the party's defeat in the Lok Sabha.          The senior Congress leaders asked Gogoi not to resign.
