JK Borgohain passes away

Veteran journalist, prolific writer and socio economic and political analyst Jatindra Kumar Borgohain passed away on Wednesday following a brief illness.

Borgohain died two died at the Hayat Hospital at around 2-50 in the afternoon two days after he was rushed to it following a serious ailment. Despite best “possible” treatment, he failed to recuperate. He was 72.

Borgohain, who hailed from Jakhalabandha area in Nagaon district started his career of service as an assistant professor of economics in JB College. In 1992, he came to Guwahati and joined as editor wioth a vernacular daily. Since then, he served several media houses. He further joined as  editor in chief with a city based news channel.  A pall of gloom descended as soon as the news of his demise spread like wild fire.

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi along with many other political and non political leadersand organizations expressed deep shock at his demise.

Assamese youths held in Chennai

Chennai police have arrested two youths from Assam on recovering a huge amount of rupees in cash from their possession.Identified as Zakir Hussain and Anwar, the duo were caught during a vehicle checking by the election commission’s flying squad on Tuesday afternoon.Police claimed to have found a bag containing Rs 1.84 lakh which thy allegedly stole from the owner of a lodge in Royapettah where he Zakir worked.Hussain is believed to have stolen the bag left the hotel by an autorickshaw where he later picked up his fiend Anwar at Periamet.The duo were held were walking to and fro in the city amid sharp vigilance of the Election Commission's flying squad which  stopped the vehicle...

PM coming to cast vote

Dispur turns into a security fortress a day before the third and final phase of Lok Sabha polls. Dispur Govt HS School seems to have drawn maximum concentration of the security forces.Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh is all set to visit the school to exercise his franchise on Thursday. Dr Singh, who is on his last visit to the state as a prime minister, is scheduled to arrive in Guwahati Airport at 12 noon by a special plane.Then Dr Singh, who represents Assam in the Rajya Sabha, will straightly leave for Dispur by a helicopter where he would cast his vote at the Dispur Govt HS School at around 12-30.During his brief visit to the capital city, Dr Singh will meet chief minister Tarun Gogoi...

Policeman found killed

A police constable deployed in poll duty is believed to have been killed in Udalguri district on Wednesday.Identified as Lakhi Gogoi, the policeman in Lakhimpur district was deployed in Rowta for a couple of days on polling duty.His body which bore marks of injury was recovered in Lailpungpara in the morning nearly ten hours after he went missing from the camp. Police investigation is going on to ascertain the real incident.

Poll prep completes in Barpeta

Barpeta is gearing up for a free and fair Lok Sabha polls in the third and final phase slated for Thursday.Voting in this crucial constituency is taking place at over 1900 booths from 7 in the morning till 5 in the evening.Altogether 1071322voters will exercise their franchise to elect the MP out of 15 candidates in the fray.Sitting MP and Congress candidate Ismile Hussain is facing a keen contest with AIUDF candidate Sirajuddin  Ajmal while BJP candidate Chandra Mohan Patowary and his AGP rival and former party colleague Phani Bhushan Chaudhury have been enjoying no less popularity and support.

Amid massive security arrangements, Mongoldoi is all prepared to go to the Lok Sabha polls on Thursday.Altogether 15,55,480  voters are set to exercise their franchise in over 170 polling booths.Polling personnel with Electronic voting machines have already reached the booths.Voting will begin from 7 in the morning which will continue till 5 in the evening to decide on the fate of twelve candidates.BJP candidate and sitting MP Ramen Deka is pitted hia Congress rival Kirip Chaliha while AGP candidate and former Congress MP Madhab Rajbanshi has a considerable supporters who is contesting as AGP candidate.

Come Thursday. Altogether 15,12,151 voters are prepared to exercise their franchise to decide on the fate of  seven candidates in the final phase of the Lok Sabbha polls.The voting will begin from 7 in the morning at 1,891  booths which will end only at 5 in the afternoon. Heavily guarded by the security forces, the polling officials have already reached their assigned booths.The crucial constituency is locked in a triangular contest among BJP Congress and AIUDF. Sitting MPP and BJP candidate Rajen Gohain is facing a tough contest with Congress candidate Junjunali Baruah while AIUDF leader Dr Aditya Langthasa is certainly make a dent the BJP and Congress strongholds.

4 killed in bus mishap

At least 4 people were killed and over 20 have been injured when a passenger bus rammed into another bus near Nagaon town on Wednesday.The incident took place in the wee hours on the National Highway 37 at Sonaribari in Samoguri where Jorhat bound bus rammed into another stranded passenger bus on its way to Dimapur.Identified as Arvind Kar, Guljar Hussain, Juhur Ali and Sahabuddin, four persons died on the spot. Police Local residents in large number came out to the rescue of the passengers. Thirteen passengers have been rushed to the Nagaon Civil Hospital where they are undergoing treatment. 

PM coming on April 24

Its final. Prime minister Dr Manmohan Singh is coming to Guwahati on Thursday. According to official sources, Dr Singh who represents Assam in the Rajya Sabha, has a very brief schedule in the capital city. Dr Singh who is shown to have been staying at a rented house in Sarumotoria, is scheduled to arrive in Guwahati airport at 11 in the morning. Then he would straightly leave for Dispur to cast his vote at the Dispur Govt LP school. Then he is scheduled to leave back to New Delhi.
