JK Borgohain passes away

Veteran journalist, prolific writer and socio economic and political analyst Jatindra Kumar Borgohain passed away on Wednesday following a brief illness.

Borgohain died two died at the Hayat Hospital at around 2-50 in the afternoon two days after he was rushed to it following a serious ailment. Despite best “possible” treatment, he failed to recuperate. He was 72.

Borgohain, who hailed from Jakhalabandha area in Nagaon district started his career of service as an assistant professor of economics in JB College. In 1992, he came to Guwahati and joined as editor wioth a vernacular daily. Since then, he served several media houses. He further joined as  editor in chief with a city based news channel.  A pall of gloom descended as soon as the news of his demise spread like wild fire.

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi along with many other political and non political leadersand organizations expressed deep shock at his demise.

Diphu polling ends on brisk note

Recording a huge turn out of voters, the polling in Diphu Lok Sabha constituency ended in the afternoon on Saturday.The voting took place at 1006 booths where the fate of 6 candidates is sealed in the electronic voting machines. The turn out was expectedly high---68 per cent.The authorities have identified 54 booths as hyper sensitive along with 233 very sensitive and 412 sensitive. As many as 17 companies of security forces have been deployed in the constituency and helicopter surveillance was conducted since Thursday to monitor the movement of militants.In the fray are six candidates. Polling is over in Karimganj where over 68 per cent voters exercised their franchise to decide on the fate of 15 candidates.Polling ended at 1,504 booths from 7 in the morning at 5 in the afternoon recording a huge turn out.The authorities have identified 97 as hyper sensitive and 694 as sensitive along with 529 hyper sensitive. The rest are comparatively safe.The contest is triangular. Congress, BJP and AIUDF are equally strong in Karimganj. The two-time sitting Congress MP Lalit Mohan Suklabaidya is pitted against BJP candidate Krishna Das while AIUDF candidate Radheyshyam Biswas is set to get no less vote in the minority pockets.Counting will take place along with the rest of the country...

Polling ended in Silchar Lok Sabha constituency on a brisk note on Saturday. Now the fatse of altogether 17 candidates are sealed in the ballot boxes.The turn out is a huge 70 per cent in Silchar. Voters----both male and female were waiting in long queues in front of the polling stations from 7 in the morning. Long queues were seen till 4.30 in the evening---just before the end.   Polling in this Barak Valley constituency took place at 1233 stations. Sonia, Rahul to campaign again

Congress president Sonia Gandhi along with vice president Rahul Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will visit Assam to campaign for the candidates who are contesting in the third phase of polls slated for April 24.AICC sources told Assam Times in New Delhi that the party high command has agreed to campaign in the state after it received request from the Rajiv Bhawan.The party is set to hold at least seven rallies for the third phase of polls where the trio would attend.Party leaders in New Delhi claimed that they would not get less than ten seats in the state.

Boiragi receives Akademi award

Umakanta Boiragi made Assam proud again. 15 policemen suspended in Cachar

The authorities have suspended 15 constables in Cachar district for not attending duty at the poll material distribution centre in Silchar on Friday.The constables are Hussain Ali, Pravin Bora, Najmul Haque Choudhury, Ananta Kumar Nath, Nasirul Haqque, Ibocha Singha, Mihir Kanti Das, Shiv Kanti Dey, Krishna Sinha, Dipak Kanti Das, Mridul Choudhury, Gautam Sinha, Kadir Hussain Laskar, Jahar Kanti Nath and Bijoy Sinha.
