JK Borgohain passes away

Veteran journalist, prolific writer and socio economic and political analyst Jatindra Kumar Borgohain passed away on Wednesday following a brief illness.

Borgohain died two died at the Hayat Hospital at around 2-50 in the afternoon two days after he was rushed to it following a serious ailment. Despite best “possible” treatment, he failed to recuperate. He was 72.

Borgohain, who hailed from Jakhalabandha area in Nagaon district started his career of service as an assistant professor of economics in JB College. In 1992, he came to Guwahati and joined as editor wioth a vernacular daily. Since then, he served several media houses. He further joined as  editor in chief with a city based news channel.  A pall of gloom descended as soon as the news of his demise spread like wild fire.

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi along with many other political and non political leadersand organizations expressed deep shock at his demise.

Cong to announce 3 candidates

AICC is likely to announce the remaining three candidates on Monday.Junjonali Baruah will be the party’s candidate for Nagaon while Wzed Ali Chaudhury will contest from Dhubri to face AIUDF president Badaruddin Ajmal.Talking to reporters in New Delhi on Sunday, chief minister Tarun Gogoi said that AICC election committee has yet to finalize the candidate for Mongoldoi seat.Notably, the party has announced candidates for 10 seats on Saturday.

KMSS workers from the far flung areas have thronged Guwahati on Sunday to hold a huge gathering on Monday to demand release Akhil Gogoi.Thousands of people have already arrived in the city on Sunday evening. More people are arriving on Monday. The gathering will take place at Digholipukhuri where several noted personalities have confirmed their participation.Later, they would send a memorandum to the chief minister demanding the release of the KMSS president.

Mooshahary joins TMC

Finally, Ranjit Sekhar Mooshahary has joined the Trinamool Congress. The former NSG director will contest from Kokrajhar in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.Mooshahary joined the party at a brief function in Koklata attended by party president and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Sunday.

AGP is gearing up for the Lok Sabha polls slated for April 7, 12 and 24.The regional party failed to reach out to BJP for an alliance. AICC second list on Monday

AICC election committee is all set to publish the second list of the candidates including three candidates from Assam.According to sources, the party finds it difficult to finalise the names in the face of revolt within the party.In Mongoldoi, the panel comprises Pranjit Chaudhury, Kirip Chaudhury and Ranjan Bhuyna.In Dhubri, leadership wants Rockybul Hussian. But his refusal seems to have pave the way for Wazed Ali Choudhury.Leadership wants Junjonali Baruah from Nagaon. But some other strong contenders might hamper the party’s poll prospect.

Resurfacing revolt in Cong

Revolt revisits in Assam Congress. That too hardly a month before the Lok Sabha polls. Simmering discontent seems to have taken centrestage within the ruling party after AICC announced the candidates for 10 Lok Sabha polls.Led by Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, over a dozen MLAs and ministers have been camping in New Delhi to get their own candidates fielded in the polls.The dissident group has not been success while AICC election committee has cleared the names in favour of Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and APCC president Bhubneswar Kalita.Miffed at this development, the dissident legislators are all set to call on Sonia Gandhi revealing their grudge.  

Resentment in Dibrugarh BJP

BJP has yet to announce the Lok Sabha poll candidate for Dibrugarh. But discontent is simmering among the party activists.A huge number of party workers openly criticized the move to field Bhabesh Sarma from the crucial Lok Sabha seat this time.Talking to Assam Times, a section of the party workers said that they would not cooperate Sarma who is a dark horse within the party.They want Prasant Phukan as their candidate from Dibrugarh saying that Phukan has a strong network in the party’s grass root level.

DU students stage dharna
