AASU demands BVFCL augmentation

The lone fertilizer industry of the entire Northeast, the Brahmaputra Vally Fertilizer Co-operation Ltd (BVFCL) at Namrup has been in the doldrums. So a general apathy by the government in revamping BVFCL has caused the AASU to take up agitation.

Namrup district AASU members held mass rally near BVFCL Namrup on March 1 demanding modernization of the Namrup II and III manufacturing plants and setting up of a fourth plant. The organisation said the Congress-led government both at the centre and the the state are not showing much interest to revive and upgraded the plants. Now important note that, BVFCL's two units are currently producing urea as follows Unit II-290 metric tonnes amonea and 400 mt urea, on the other hand unit III-380 tonnes Amonea & 750 tonnes Urea per day. But the plant has an installed capacity which is more than this.

In June 26, 2006, the then Union chemical minister, Ram Vilas Paswan had declared that the Centre would provide funds to set up Unit IV at BVFCL at an estimated cost 2600 crore. But five years after that public announcement , nothing has happened.
