Accessibility
Assam Times is built to be usable by everyone. Here's what's already in place, how to use it, and a way to tell us what's missing.
Built-in Accessibility Features
- Press Tab right after a page loads to reveal a "Skip to main content" link, letting keyboard users jump past the header and navigation straight to the page's content.
- Full keyboard navigation
- Every interactive element — menu, search, share buttons, comments, the forms on this page — is reachable and operable by keyboard alone. Focused elements show a visible orange outline. The mobile menu and search box both close with the Escape key and return focus to the button that opened them.
- High contrast mode
- On article pages, tap the "HC" button in the utility bar (between the category label and the headline) to switch to a high-contrast color scheme. Your choice is remembered site-wide.
- Dark mode
- Tap the moon icon in the same utility bar to switch to a dark background with light text. Persists across pages and visits (mutually exclusive with high contrast mode).
- Adjustable text size
- Use the A-/A/A+ buttons in the utility bar to shrink, reset, or enlarge the article body text.
- Print-friendly articles
- The Print button opens your browser's print dialog with a clean, print-optimized layout of the article — no ads, navigation, or sidebar.
- Alt text on images
- Featured images and author photos include descriptive alt text for screen readers.
- Descriptive labels on icons and buttons
- Every icon-only button (search, share, menu, comments, like, and more) has a label describing what it does, so screen readers announce something meaningful instead of just "button."
