Durga puja gets underway

 Amid much fanfare and traditional religious fervor, Durga puja festival got underway on Tuesday. The idol of the goddess of strength was formally installed at the alter at 9-30 in the evening chanting hymns and mantras.

Devotees started thronging the puja pendals for puja offering immediately after the installation of the idols. Saptami puja falls on Wednesday. Guwahati alone has over 300 puja pendals this time guarded by security forces apprehending terrorist attack.

Puja pendals, mostly, in Guwahati have installed CCTV cameras following the instruction by the district administration. The idols would be immersed on Saturday afternoon. Cutural functions along with various competitions are also lined the next three days.

Another Saraighat bridge opens

Its a dream come true for the people in lower Assam districts. In a major boost to address the surface communication gap, union road and transport minister Nitin Gadkari opened the second Saraighat bridge over the Brahmaputra river in Guwahati on Sunday. Budget session begins tomorrow

Assam assembly will begin its budget session on Monday which is expected to be a stormy one in view of the Opposition’s plan to corner the BJP-led government. Assam governor Banwarilal Purhit will open the session with his address at nine in the morning. Finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma will table the annual budget next week. Mobile theatre pioneer dead

Ratan Lahkar is mo more. The harbinger of Assamese mobile theatre is dead. The famed theatre maker who heralded a new era in theatre passed away on Sunday noon after prolonged illness leaving the people in a state of utter shock. Various organizations and individuals thronged his residence at Pathsala in Barpeta district to pay their last respect to the lifeless theatre personality.

Hiten Goswami assembly Speaker

BJP legislator from Jorhat Hitendra Nath Goswami will be the Assam Assembly Speaker replacing Ranjit Das, who has already taken over as state Party president.Goswami’s name was formally cleared at the party’s legislative body meeting at the Brahmaputra Guest House on Saturday evening. Probe in to satriya distortion in R Day parade

The Assam government has instituted a probe into the alleged distortion of satriya dance in the Republic Day parade in New Delhi on Thursday.
