Football fever grips Guwahati

Guwahati dresses afresh. The spotlight falls on Sarusajai. A section of footballers is camping in the premier north eastern city for the second ISL football matches begining from Wednesday.

The stadium dazzles with dressing rooms of international standard for the players apart from tunnels, dug outs, huge screens with Lets’ football ringtones. The stages are for the thrilling ISL matches.

The countdown began at 4 in the afternoon in presence of thousands of football fans who are waiting to see the clash between 8-1 United and Kerala Blasters. The glittering event got underway with the performance of Angarag Mahanta and Zubeen Garg.

Sachin Tendulkar, John Abraham are among the personalities who are all prepared to enjoy the match along with their fans. City police have made some changes in the routes of the buses to and from Sarusajai on Monday.

MCI recognitions not cancelled

The Medical Council of India has not cancelled the recognitions to the Jorhat Medical College and Barpeta Medical College.
This was what health minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Monday. Addressing a press conference in Dispur, Dr Sarma said that the report in the section of media was false and based not on facts.
He further said that Jorhat Medical College will begin the post graduate course from this session. He said the medical colleges are now free to hike the number of seats from this session.

Fellowship to study on ‘Pavement Dwellers of Guwahati’

Guwahati Press Club with the support from ERD Foundation, Guwahati has declared a short term fellowship programme to study various aspects of pavement dwellers (primarily beggars) of the city. The one and half month long fellowship is expected to provide space for the journalist to go for an in-depth study (and report) about the issue. The fellow will try to analyze the reason behind their homelessness, categorization and also the security aspect of the homeless persons in Guwahati.

The selected fellow will be offered Rs 15,000 as remuneration. At the end of the fellowship, (s)he has to submit a comprehensive report (of not less than 5000 words) on the issue (preferably in English ) to the press club, which may be brought out in printed form later.

Interested journalists (preferably from Guwahati) are requested to send the application with a brief CV and a sample report (of any issue) to the office of Guwahati Press Club on or before March 13, 2009.

3 KLO link men arrested

Security forces apprehended three over ground workers (OGW) of Kamatapur Liberation Organisation (KLO) from two different villages on Wednesday morning during search operation in Kokrajhar district. Based on an input about presence of the link men of the KLO, a joint team of police and Rajput regiment carried out search operation and apprehended three link men from different villages under Serfanguri and Kokrajhar PS in Kokrajhar district. They were identified as Amit Roy and Nitai Roy of Bijulibari under Kokrajhar PS and Hitesh Roy of Nepalpara under Serfanguri PS. A country made riffle, two hand made pistol and 8 round live ammunition recovered from them.
