Prof Taher passes away

The death of eminent educationist, social scientist, renowned geographer and author Mohammad Taher has been widely condoled across the state. Professor Taher breathed his last in a private hospital in Guwahati yesterday morning after a prolonged illness. He was 83. 

After obtaining his PhD degree from the Auckland University, Newzealand he joined the Gauhati University as a teacher. Described as a doyen of Indian Geography,Mohammad Taher retired from the Geography Department of the Gauhati University as Head and Dean of Faculty of Science in the 1990s. He authored more than 20 text books for geography students besides books on other subjects.

A lower court in Guwahati on Thursday jailed Zubeen Garg for slapping a young boy in the city four years back.  The Guwahati session court cleared the judgment when after hearing both the two parties and imposed ₹5,000 fine to the victim, the son of a senior lawyer, whom he alleged slapped four years back. The victim then moved the court and conducted a few rounds of hearing and pronounced the landmark judgment on Thursday.

Following the call from the national media fraternity, the city based journalists today demonstrated their resentments against the relentless killing of scribes across India in front of Guwahati Press Club. Veteran journalist Radhika Mohan Bhagwati passed away after prolonged illness on Saturday. The end came for the octogenerisn author early in the morning when his family members were beside him.  Many media people, authors and social activist rushed to his house as the sad news of hid demise spread like wildfire. Many organizations also have deeply condoled his death and called it a huge loss in thr field of journalism.
Bandari Lal Purhit is leaving Assam as governor paving the way for Jagdish Mukhi in his place. Purhit, who was appointed as Assam governor one and a half years back will take over as Tamil Nadu governor. Finally, the Central Bureau of Investigation has lodged a formal complaint against six unnamed officials of the Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) in connection with the Louis Berger bribery scam.  The country’s premier investigation agency filed FIR on Thursday two weeks after the Gauhati High Court ordered the authority to hand over the probe to CBI slamming the state police for it's failure. The army jawans deployed in the surgical strike claimed to have killed two north eastern rebels along the Indo-Myanmar border on Wednesday.  According to an army statement, apart from two NSCN(K) rebels, nod each from KYKL and KCP rebels were killed during the strike where many others sustained injury.  Meanwhile, the Naga rebel outfit claimed to have killed three army jawans during the heavy gun  battle which started in the wee hours.  Earlier, we reported the elimination of two dreaded Naga rebels in the strike.
