The All Assam Students’ Union is holding a statwide protest on Tuesday reiterating the demand for constitutional safeguard for the indigenous people.
Hundreds of activists of the state’s influential student body thronged the district and sub divisional headquarters at 11 in the morning and started staging dharna.
The protesters in Guwahati told Assam Times that they won’t compromise the demand which they have been raising the last few decades.
“We won’t bend. The demand is not new. Constitutional safeguard must be there t protect the indigenous people,” said Ravi Saikia who is holding dharna along with others in Guwahati.
Another student Anamika Gogoi told Assam Times that over the years, the government has been failing to deliver the goods. “Are these people in power trying to escape the responsibility? We won’t allow it to happen,” said Anamika who is degree student.
“We see that the government has been resorting to delaying tactic whenever we reiterate the demand. Of late, the Tarun Gogoi government has been trying to create an utter confusion among the people citing an yet-to-be ascertained definition of the Assamese. But our demand could have been addressed even bypassing the definition issue,” said Chitradeep Deka.
The AASU leaders further threatened to launch a massive strike if the government fails to listen to them.
