The 15613/15614 Guwahati-Murkongselek Intercity Express was announced in the railway budget of 2014-15. The train got delayed because of some technical reasons pertaining to safety clearances. But these hurdles are over.
All eyes are fixed on the upcoming train in between Guwahati and Dhemaji which will go a long way to bridge the yawning communication gap.

The civil society groups and media persons on Friday paid rich tributes to Bhesaj Ratna Dr Gunaram Khanikar, who left for heavenly abode on early morning of 7 January 2016. The Guwahatians in a simple condolence meeting held at Guwahati Press Club remembered the immense contributions made by the herbal medicine specialist for the society. Dr Khanikar, 67, breathed his last in the city based Down Town Hospital at around 1.25 am. His cremation was also done on 8 January at his village Tetelital in Golaghat district of eastern Assam in presence of thousands well-wishers. Patriotic People’s Front Assam (PPFA) in northeast India has urged the Assam government to complete the construction of proposed war memorial on the northern bank of Dighalipukhuri in the city at the earliest. The forum, while supporting the arguments of All Assam Ex-Servicemen Association that ‘the project would in no way distort the heritage appeal, aesthetic beauty and ecological sanctity of the historic water-body’ also appealed to the section of citizens, who are opposing the endeavour, not to hinder on its earliest completion. The massive earthquake that rattled Assam for nearly a minute claimed 2 persons on Monday morning. Both the casualties have taken place in Guwahati. Identified Raju Bora and Niranjan Das from Maligaon area, died when they were running out of the homes in the earthquake. Guwahati Medical College Hospital alone has been offering treatment to 14 people who sustained injury in the calamity. This is apart from 2 other people who were admitted to the MMCH. Hundreds of buildings and boundary walls including temples and mosques have cracked in the quake across the state. There are reports of damage in the railway tracks.
A huge tremor rocked Assam and Manipur early in the morning on Monday unleashing panic in both the north eastern state. The 6.9 magnitude tremor which originated along the Indo-Myanmar border in Manipur brewed a great deal of damage in Manipur. Cracks are seen in many buildings in Manipur where people in the wee hours ran out to the streets. The tremor was felt nearly one hour creating huge hue and cry among a section of Guwahatians when the clock struck at 4-49 in the morning. There is no immediate report of any damage of property in Assam.

Two senior rural journalists of Assam were presented Sangbad Indra Gramya award on Monday by the Journalist Action Committee Assam (JAC)’s Goalpara district unit. Baharul Islam, a correspondent based at Kochua of Nagaon district was conferred on the award for the year 2014 and north Guwahati based senior journalist Bhairab Sarma received the award for 2013, which was constituted in memory of victim rural scribe Indra Mohan Hakacham.
