Why don’t stop animal sacrifice

Animal sacrifice in Durga puja strikes no less shock and anger among many organizations and individuals across the state

Dozens of buffalos and goats are being sacrificed in many temples in the name of Durga puja from Tuesday. A glimpse of the buffalos, goats, ducks and pigeons being kept for sacrifice at the historic Kamakhya temple premises really shocks the animal lovers. Same it is in many places where the same shocking tradition is allowed in Durga Puja.

 “We are helpless. We have been dead opposed to the tradition of animal sacrifice. But the organizers have been refusing to read our campaign. This is a matter of grave concern,” said Shailen Saikia from Sivasagar district who has been campaigning against animal sacrifice.

Juli Chutia from Kakojan area in Jorhat told Assam Times that the people must understand the reality. “The things have undergone a sea change now. Everywhere change reigns supreme. But we don’t understand why we are still stick to this tradition. Our minds need to be changed.”

“It would take time to end the tradition of animal sacrifice. If 1000 buffalos and 5000 goats were sacrificed ten years ago, now 50 buffalos and 100 goats are being sacrificed,” said Pranjal Bora from Nagaon.

Bora who is running a non governmental organization told Assam Times over telephone that a massive campaign is the need of the hour against animal sacrifice which has yet to take place. “The campaign should have taken place at least 3 months before the commencement of the Durga puja. People from the nook and corner of the state should be aware of it. But I do hope that after 20 years the tradition of animal sacrifice would die down,” he said.

I think it is time to do away with animal sacrifice. It is a barbaric practise.It should stop both for hindu festivals as well as for other religions like for bakrid.

About 150 years back it was a 'religious custom' in India to force widows to get burnt on their husband's funeral pyre (Sati) today we consider it a barbaric tradition. Similarly, years from now, our future generations will look back at us and call us barbaric. A god who wants the blood of an innocent animal to satisfy him/her cannot be called a god. It can only be a devil/demon. Rather the people who sacrifice animals (be it Bakr Id or Durga Pooja) are devils who sully the name of their god with their crime of killing innocent animals.

The All Assam Students Union has reiterated its old demands before the Centre when an AASU delegation met Union home minister Rajnath Singh in New Delhi on Wednesday. Led by AASU adviser Dr Samujjal Bhattacharya, the four member delegation called on the Union minister and demanded implementation of the Assam Accord, sealing of Indo-Bangla border and updating the national registrar of citizens at the earliest. They told Singh that sealing of the porous international border will only help the state prevent entry of immigrants and jihadi elements. President Pranab Mukherjee is arriving in Tezpur on a two days visit to Assam and Arunachal Pradesh on Thursday. Dhubri police claimed to have captured two jehadis during an operation where Burdwan blast accused Sahanur Alom is believed to have escaped on Wednesday.Sources told Assam Times that acting on a tip off, a special unit of police launched an operation in Fakiraganj area in South Salmara where Sahanur Ali and Abdul Noor were captured. However, Sahanur Alom, wanted in the Burdwan blast case managed to escape in the wee hours.       
Chief minister Tarun Gogoi said that he was not aware of any move of Congress legislator to join BJP. Talking to reporters on the sidelines of a function in Guwahati on Wednesday, “Its I think not true. If anybody wants to join anywhere let them do it,” Gogoi said.His reaction comes a day after a BJP MLA claimed that over 15 sitting MLAs from Congress are in talks with BJP leadership to join the party.   
The Kolkata High Court is likely to hear a petition on Wednesday seeking bail for Sadanana Gogoi two days after CBI named the singer in Saradha scam.Sources told Assam Times that the petition moved before the high court on Tuesday is expected to come up for hearing before the court in the second half on Wednesday.CBI special team arrested Gogoi two and half months ago after interrogating him for several times in Kolkata. A special CBI court remanded him to judicial custody towards the end of September.
Despite stepped up security measures insurgent elements have been roaming along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border without any hindrance in Sonitpur. Security forces apprehended two ULFA men along with a linkman in the district on Tuesday. Sources told Assam Times that the trio were nabbed at an operation by a CRPF commando force in the afternoon. Acting on a tip off, CRPF commandos launched a special offensive against them where the trio were nabbed from the interstate border. 
Dr Bhumidhar Barman has a providential escape when his convoy met with a road mishap in Nalbari on Tuesday.The mishap took place at Mukalmuwa where the senior Congress leader and former minister was touring in the afternoon. One of the vehicles of his convoy was damaged in the mishap.Sources told Assam Times that Dr Barman is fine and safe. 
The Central Bureau of Investigation probing the Saradha scam has named Sadananda Gogoi along with at least ten others in the second chargesheet on Monday. The country’s premier investigation agency has filed the chargesheet before the additional chief judical magistrate in Alipore in the afternoon.According to CBI, the chargesheet was filed in connection with a case registered against M/s Saradha Realty India Ltd. and others. The chargesheet named many companies of the chit fund aided group - Saradha Realty India Ltd., M/s.
