The annual Ambubachi Mela began at the revered Kamakhya Temple on Sunday, marking the start of a four-day spiritual congregation that attracts lakhs of devotees, sadhus and tantric practitioners from across the country.

With the commencement of the Ambubachi Mahayog, the temple doors were closed to devotees and will remain shut for three days, in keeping with the belief that Goddess Kamakhya undergoes her annual menstrual cycle during this period.

Located atop Nilachal Hill in Guwahati, the shrine is regarded as one of the most important Shakti Peethas and a major centre of Tantric worship. During the three-day observance, all regular rituals and public darshan remain suspended.

The Assam Government, district administration and temple authorities have made elaborate arrangements for security, accommodation, sanitation, healthcare and crowd management to facilitate the smooth conduct of the mela. Lakhs of pilgrims are expected to visit the temple during the festival.

The temple is scheduled to reopen on June 26 after the completion of the prescribed purification and religious rituals, when devotees will once again be allowed to offer prayers and receive the sacred Ambubachi prasad.
