Tribal Sangha Files FIR Over Alleged Land Encroachment in Kokrajhar

KOKRAJHAR, August 8, 2026 — The Kokrajhar district unit of the All Assam Tribal Sangha has lodged an FIR against Chandan Pal, Sanjan Pal and Ranjan Pal of Pal Brothers & Company, alleging encroachment and unauthorised construction on government land at Patargaon in Kokrajhar.

Based on the complaint filed on August 5, 2026, Kokrajhar Sadar Police registered Case No. 119/2026 under Section 173 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Sections 3(1)(P) and 3(1)(Q) of the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989, as amended in 2015.

The disputed land, measuring 5 bighas and 15 lechas and bearing Dag No. 666 under Kokrajhar Revenue Circle, was earlier under the Water Resources Department. The Tribal Sangha had sought the land for its office and community institutions, including the Brahma Dharma Committee, Bathou Charitable Trust and Catholic Welfare Society.

According to the Sangha, the BTC government has already allotted 2 bighas and 15 lechas to the organisation for construction of its office, while allotment of the remaining portion to the Bathou Charitable Trust and Catholic Welfare Society is reportedly underway.

The Sangha alleged that the three accused attempted to construct a permanent concrete wall on the land during the day. After office-bearers objected, they allegedly returned at night with around 50 labourers and erected a tin-sheet fence around the disputed government land.

Following the incident, the district unit approached Kokrajhar Sadar Police seeking action against those allegedly involved.

The registration of the case has brought the land dispute before the police and concerned authorities, with the Tribal Sangha seeking protection of the government land and implementation of the proposed allotments.

The next steps by the police, district administration and BTC Department of Land and Land Revenue are being watched by the organisations involved in the dispute.
