Scribes remember Dipak Mahanta

City based scribes and well wishers of Dipak Mahanta, who had recently died in a road mishap, paid homage to him in a function organized at Guwahati Press Club on Saturday. The attending journalists, while mourning Mahanta’s untimely death, emphasized on preservation of his creations for the benefit of future generation. Mahanta, who was a dedicated theatre activist and a journalist penned, designed and directed a number of plays including ‘Ulanga Roja’, ‘Malati Mem’, ‘Holi’, ‘Pinhole Camera’, ‘Gajapuria’, ‘Bhotaram Totaram’, ‘Aadipath’, ‘Dhaniramor Theatre’, ‘Kurma Avatar’, ‘Tejimola’, ‘Dhodar Alir Tender’, ‘Jadughar’ etc.

He also prepared scripts for hundreds of documentaries relating to various socio-cultural issues. Graduated from Biswanath College in 1979, Mahanta was partially involved with the profession of journalism during his productive days through different newspapers like ‘Mohajati’, ‘Agnigarh’, ‘Boodhbar’, ‘Natun Dainik, ‘Dainik Pratibimba’ and ‘Asomiya Pratidin’. He joined NewsTimeAssam as a producer and started television journalism career. Lately Mahanta was involved with AssamTalks as a senior producer.

The speakers including Manas Kumar Mahanta, Raman Bora, Sanjib Phukan, Mrinal Bora, Rupam Barua, Jagadindra Raichoudhiry, Nava Thakuria, Jesim Raja etc highlighted the simplicity of Mahanta, even though he had to fight all along for survival and creations.

Meanwhile, Mahanta’s family members have performed the rituals at his Tezpur residence with Adyashraddha today and Matsyasparsha scheduled for Monday next.

RDX seized from bus in Jagun

TINSUKIA: The Tinsukia police have averted a huge explosion in the state as they seized some explosive materials from a passenger bus in Jagun on Wednesday. Acting on a tip off, a police team in Jagun conducted a checking on the bus which was coming from Arunachal Pradesh where a huge cache of RDX was found inside a bag. The police then questioned the driver, assistants of the bus along with the passengers. But later the passengers were allowed to go and detained the driver and his assistants for further interrogation. "Investigation is going on. NE ideal soil for organic farming

The government is planning an organic revolution for the country, and the ICAR-National Bureau of Soil Survey and Land Use Planning (NBSS&LUP) has come to its aid by identifying areas holding high potential for the same. All party meet to end NRC logjam

GUWAHATI:All party legislators are hunkering down in Guwahati on Wednesday to break the logjam over NRC after the Centre sought the Supreme Court's permission to extend the date to publish thr draft. Assam assembly Speaker Hitendra Nath Goswami is presiding over the crucial meeting of the legislators to discuss the ongoing controversy where the various organizations and opposition parties have called it a calculated conspiracy to include the names of the Hindu Bangladeshi immigrants in the NRC draft. The home ministry recently moved a petition before the country's apex court seeking an extension of the date to publish the NRC draft till July 31 next year triggering fresh controversy.

Injured wild elephant dies hard death

TANGLA:Yet another wild elephant died a hard death three days after it sustained injury inside a dense jungle along the Indo-Bhutan border in Udalguri district on Tuesday. A firewood collector discovered the full grown animal three days back and passed the information to the forest department. But of no avail. Three days after an intense battle with life, the elephant died and the villagers spotted the carcass in the morning on the Bhorla river bordering Bhutan sending huge shockwave among the animal lovers who blamed it all on the forest authority for failing to provide adequate treatment to the animal which was battling with death for three months.

14 ACS, APS officers jailed in APSC scam

GUWAHATI: A special court in Guwahati on Tuesday remanded 14 ACS and APS officers to judicial custody after the end of their 14 days police custody in connection with the APSC scam. The Dibrugarh police probing the scam produced these officers before the special court in the morning and sought no extension of their demand. Then the court reminded them to the judicial custody for 14 days. All of them were arrested during the initial stage of the massive crackdown. AGP-BJP difference widens further

Nagaland sub division on the soil of Assam!

GOLAGHAT: Tension starts escalating along the Assam-Nagaland border in Golaghat district where the neighbouring north eastern state opened a new sub division in some areas under the territory of Assam. Prez visits Kamakhya, offers puja

GUWAHATI:President Ramnath Kovind who is on a three days visit to the north eastern region visited the Kamakhya temple and offered puja to the goddess. Accompanied by his wife, the President arrived in the ancient shrine atop the Nilachal at 10 in the morning and sought blessings from the goddess Kamakhya. This was followed by his participation in the Kumari puja inside the temple premises. He spent around 45 minutes in the premises and then left for Imphal to open the North East Development Summit.

Serial director sent to jail

GUWAHATI:A popular actor and director of an entertainment channel in Guwahati has been sent to jail acting on a complaint of domestic violence. According to police, Manjeet Sarma, who is in direction of a few popular serial was sent to jail after he was arrested on Monday. Acting on a complaint filed by his wife Trishna Sarma, Manjeet was interrogated at the Chandmari police station and was arrested. Trishna in her complaint accused him of trying to kill her because his illicit affair with Prastuti Parashar, an allegation vehemently denied by the popular actor who threatened to move the court with a defamation suit.  

BTAD home guards stage stir in Kokrajhar

KOKRAJHAR: Hundreds of home guards engaged in the various government offices in the BTAD areas have staged dharma in Kojrajhar raising a set of demands on Monday. With banners and festoones they agitated home guards thronged in front of the DC office and staged dharna raising their demands.
