Scribes remember Dipak Mahanta

City based scribes and well wishers of Dipak Mahanta, who had recently died in a road mishap, paid homage to him in a function organized at Guwahati Press Club on Saturday. The attending journalists, while mourning Mahanta’s untimely death, emphasized on preservation of his creations for the benefit of future generation. Mahanta, who was a dedicated theatre activist and a journalist penned, designed and directed a number of plays including ‘Ulanga Roja’, ‘Malati Mem’, ‘Holi’, ‘Pinhole Camera’, ‘Gajapuria’, ‘Bhotaram Totaram’, ‘Aadipath’, ‘Dhaniramor Theatre’, ‘Kurma Avatar’, ‘Tejimola’, ‘Dhodar Alir Tender’, ‘Jadughar’ etc.

He also prepared scripts for hundreds of documentaries relating to various socio-cultural issues. Graduated from Biswanath College in 1979, Mahanta was partially involved with the profession of journalism during his productive days through different newspapers like ‘Mohajati’, ‘Agnigarh’, ‘Boodhbar’, ‘Natun Dainik, ‘Dainik Pratibimba’ and ‘Asomiya Pratidin’. He joined NewsTimeAssam as a producer and started television journalism career. Lately Mahanta was involved with AssamTalks as a senior producer.

The speakers including Manas Kumar Mahanta, Raman Bora, Sanjib Phukan, Mrinal Bora, Rupam Barua, Jagadindra Raichoudhiry, Nava Thakuria, Jesim Raja etc highlighted the simplicity of Mahanta, even though he had to fight all along for survival and creations.

Meanwhile, Mahanta’s family members have performed the rituals at his Tezpur residence with Adyashraddha today and Matsyasparsha scheduled for Monday next.

Media fraternity demonstrates in front of press club

Following the call from the national media fraternity, the city based journalists today demonstrated their resentments against the relentless killing of scribes across India in front of Guwahati Press Club. Organized by the Journalists’ Action Committee Assam, the demonstration was participated by various media body representatives & individual journalists and chanted slogans in support of various demands including a special protection law for media persons on duty. Veteran journalist dead

Veteran journalist Radhika Mohan Bhagwati passed away after prolonged illness on Saturday. The end came for the octogenerisn author early in the morning when his family members were beside him.  Many media people, authors and social activist rushed to his house as the sad news of hid demise spread like wildfire. Many organizations also have deeply condoled his death and called it a huge loss in thr field of journalism.

Jagdish Mukhi appointed Assam governor

Bandari Lal Purhit is leaving Assam as governor paving the way for Jagdish Mukhi in his place. Purhit, who was appointed as Assam governor one and a half years back will take over as Tamil Nadu governor. Mukhi, the lieutanent governor in Andaman will taking oath aa new Assam governor in a day or two.

CBI lodges complaints on Louis Berger scam

Finally, the Central Bureau of Investigation has lodged a formal complaint against six unnamed officials of the Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) in connection with the Louis Berger bribery scam.  The country’s premier investigation agency filed FIR on Thursday two weeks after the Gauhati High Court ordered the authority to hand over the probe to CBI slamming the state police for it's failure. Two more rebels killed in border gun fight

The army jawans deployed in the surgical strike claimed to have killed two north eastern rebels along the Indo-Myanmar border on Wednesday.  According to an army statement, apart from two NSCN(K) rebels, nod each from KYKL and KCP rebels were killed during the strike where many others sustained injury.  Meanwhile, the Naga rebel outfit claimed to have killed three army jawans during the heavy gun  battle which started in the wee hours.  Earlier, we reported the elimination of two dreaded Naga rebels in the strike. According to army, the surgical strike ad soon as the rebels attacked the patrolling column.  

NSCN(K) rebels dead in army’s surgical strike!

Two NSCN(K) rebels are believed to have died and several others sustained injury as army claimed to have launched surgical strike against trouble mongers along the Indo-Myanmar border in Nagaland. Army jawans are believed to have partially dismantled terror infrascture with the strike against the north eastern rebels who keep moving in the area en route to the north eastern states of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur and Meghalaya. Assam still had two outfits namely ULFA(I), NDFB(S) active while GNLA keep striking in Meghalaya. Manipur had been a hotbed of insurgent activities for the lady two decades.
