Nazira AASU unit staged its dharna on Friday against the spiralling price rise following the hike in VAT against 127 goods. Hundreds of student activists thronged Nazira town in the morning where they staged dharna for four hours raising slogans against the government.
Talking to Assam Times, the protesters said that the new government would have to face the consequences if its keeps the anti-people policies. “The VAT hike was unwanted. It is anti people. Common people have been bearing the brunt. We wont allow it to happen,” said the AASU leader.
Another protester said,” if is difficult to understand how the government is sparing the common people? Will the companies bear the brunt? First let the government rein in the businessmen.”

Congress leader and Nazira MLA Debobrat Saikia gets extortion call from ULFA for Rs 30 lakh in cash. According to information, he received the call on Thursday from a person who identified himself as Rupentor Axom who further threatened to kill him if he fails to pay the amount. Earlier in August 2012, Saikia got the first extortion call from ULFA forcing him to lodge FIR in Simaluguri police station. The son of late chief minister Hiteshwar Saikia repeatedly has been getting extortion call from ULFA even before the panchayat election.

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi took part at a panchayat election campaign meeting of congress paty at visit Lakuwa on Monday.
