Luitpar Club initiative for book reading

Luitpar Club in Narengi Campus of Oil India Limited recently organized a unique initiative for encouraging reading habit among the residents, primarily the young people in the colony. The club supplied various books in Assamese, English, Hindi and Bengali language to the households under Rasaraj Lakshminath Bezbaruah mobile library.

The program was launched by journalist Nava Thakuria on 21 July in presence of Luitpar Club president, its secretary Narayan Majumder, senior members including Padmeswar Kalita, Haren Sarma, Jadav Kalita, Tapas Bhattacharya, Hira Rajbongshi etc.

The killer AIDS seems to have taken a deep grip in Assam with 928 new HIV cases. According to the statistics available with the Assam State AIDS Control Society (ASACS), the disturbing scene has come to light when more and more people have come for test. Kamrup (Metro) alone has the highest HIV positive cases which stands at 38 per cent to be followed by Cachar, Dibrugarh and Nagaon districts. The police team set up to probe the APSC scam have been interrogating three ACS officers and an APS officer on probation in Guwahati to extract more clue on the scam. The three extra assistant commissioners along with the Deputy Superintendent of Police appeared the SIT in Kahilipara on Tuesday night where they have been facing marathon interrogation. More ACS and APS officers are expected to be grilled by the SIT to probe the scam where APSC chairman Rakesh Paul along with a few of his members and officers allegedly made money.
At least four people died and several others sustained injury when the bus carrying them collided its head on a truck in Dergaon on Wednesday. The accident took place at 2 in the wee hours when the passenger bus from Guwahati reached Ronganati near Dergaon where the driver was believed to have lost the control over the bus. But local residents blamed the fog for poor visibility. Three people died on the spot while the injured passengers were sent to the Jorhat Medical College Hospital.
A local court in Guwahati on Tuesday remanded Basanta Doley to 14 days police custody a day after the APSC member was arrested in connection with a selection scam. The police team probing the scam produced Doley before the court in the afternoon and sought him in their remand for further interrogation. Then the court allowed the police to take the APSC member in their custody for the next 14 days. Doley was arrested after 10 hours of interrogation in this connection. Dutta caught the attention after he damaged some official documents in the office premises a couple of days after chairman Rakesh Paul was arrested by Dibrugarh police.
The Journalists’ Forum Assam (JFA) expressed grief at the demise of Sukhendu Bhattacharya. Bhattacharya breathed his last on Sunday. The former PTI scribe was suffering from various ailments for some time. He was cremated on Monday afternoon. Bhattacharya, 52, left behind his mother, wife, two children and a host of friends. He worked for PTI from Guwahati and Kolkata since 1988. Lately he took voluntary retirement from the news agency and started living in the city permanently.

The Gauhati High Court on Tuesday granted bail to Akhil Gogoi in two cases more than a month after the KMSS leader was sent to jail. Both the cases are related to the incident at Jakhalabandha police station where he allegedly took the lead of a protest against the eviction drive in the Kaziranga National Park. But Gogoi won’t be allowed to come out of the jail as another case is pending against him where he has yet to procure the bail in Lakhimpur district.
