Shankardev Shishu Vidya Niketan School at Dadara near Hajo is ready to get another facelift with the financial support from Guwahati Round Table 235, the Guwahati chapter of Round Table India (www.roundtableindia.org). The completed phase two section, comprising three classrooms, verandah & staircases with a total area of 2,750 square feet, will be inaugurated on 8 January next. Kamrup (rural) district magistrate Vinod Seshan has consented to inaugurate phase two part on Sunday in presence of district police chief PS Mahanta. “The foundation stone for development was laid on the 7 February 2016, where the project was planned to be completed in a phased manner with the first phase has already been completed. It was inaugurated by Assam education minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma,” informed Parveen Goyal, chief of Guwahati Round Table 235.
Addressing the media persons on Wednesday, Goyal also added that they would soonstart the construction of phase three and expected to get it completed by the end of 2017. He described his mother organization as a non-religious and non-political entity. The Round Table India has over 4,500 chapters across the country comprising young businessmen, entrepreneurs, technocrats and other professionals. Mukesh Chokhani, secretary to the Guwahati chapter of Round Table India disclosed that they adopted the Dadara Shishu Niketan school under its flagship freedom through education project. He also added that they planned to develop around 10,500 sqft in the school premises with a total outlay of rupees 80 Lakhs.
Project conveners Avishek Kejriwal, Shwet Agarwal, Rahul Sethi with few others were also present on the occasion. Soon after the press meet the Guwahati Round Table 235 office bearers donated two galvanized steel chairs for Guwahati Press Club, which were accepted by the GPC secretary Nava Thakuria in presence of other member-journalists.
Armed robbers in the heart of Guwahati city whisked away diamond, gold and silver ornaments worth Rs 21 crore at gun point on Tuesday evening. According to the eyewitnesses, a gang of robbers armed with sophisticated weapons' started blankfiring as soon as they arrived in the MP Jwellery premises in the GS Road at 7 in the evening. As the robbers outside the shop started blank firing to terrorize the people, three others forcibly went inside and took away all diamond, gold and silver ornaments within five minutes. Policemen arrived in the spot but by then the robbers vanished. A case has been registered and investigation is in progress.
Four persons died when a truck full of logs carrying them slipped into a ditch in Kamrup district bordering Meghalaya on Tuesday. The shocking accident took place at Hahim in Boko where the logs fell on the four persons as soon as the truck met with the mishap. All of them died on the spot. According to the local residents, the truck which was full of smuggled logs fell into the drain after the driver lost control over it. Local residents and police rushed to the spot and took Sn hour to extricate the bodies. Police have registered a case to investigate it.
A three day special Assam assembly session from Monday will pass the Assam Goods Services Tax, 2017 to open a new leaf in the country’ tax regime. Amid an escalating cut off year controversy the Assam Congress has written to the Centre in support of 1971 as the cut off year to detect and deport the Bangladeshi immigrants from the state. In a memorandum sent to Union home minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday, APCC president Ripun Bora and Opposition leader Debobrata Saikia said the party would not demand 1951 as the cut off year. Bora and Saikia said,”the Section 6A of the Indian Citizenship Act, 1955 prescribed March 25, 1971 as the cut off year for detection and deportation of the foreigners in the state of Assam.” They said the Assam Accord with March 25, 1971 as the cut off year has been accepted by all sections of the society...

Kaziranga activists, Pranab Doley and Soneswar Narah from Jeepal Krishak Shramik Sangha (JKSS) have been granted bail on Friday. They were arrested by Bokakhat police on April 24 against a case filed on April 19 charging obstruction of public servants from discharging their duty and threatening to burn down a forest office. They were granted bail on Thursday, but arrested again in another case filed on April 24 on similar charges.

As many as five UDLF rebels are believed to have sustained injury when they were caught in a gun battle with security forces along Assam-Meghalaya border on Friday. The encounter took place at Damchera where a group of rebels targetted the CRPF jawans who were on patrolling duty at midnight. A few of the rebels are learnt to have injured in the half Sn hour long encounter which ended as soon as they vanished in the dense jungle. Security forces are looking holding joint operation in search of the injured rebels along the interstate border areas.

A special court in Guwahati on Wednesday remanded three ACS officers to police custody for 14 days hours after they the trio were arrested from different places in connection with the job for cash scam in the Assam Public Service Commission. Identified as Bhaskarjyoti Dev Sharma, the circle officer of Helem in Biswanath Chariali, Amit Sarma, the circle officer Sipahjar and circle officer from Nalbari Bhaskar Dutta were produced before the court seeking 14 days remand which the court allowed. Police, probing the scam confirmed the allegations against the trio acting on the forensic report of their answer scripts. Then they got administrative nod for action against them.
