A DRDO project planned to set up in North Guwahati hits a major roadblock as the farmers have refused leave their cultivable land fearing an abject penury.
The Assam government is planning to acquire their cultivable plot of land to hand it over to the Defence Research Development Organisation. A survey of the plot is in progress. But the farmers belonging to Borchandra, Borchandra Grant, Jolah, Bamunigaon, Bolaibeel, Bhitorkhola under Sendurighopa, Shila, Modartula Mouzas of North Guwahati Revenue circle are miffed at this decision. They have urged Kamrup Deputy Commissioner to shift the venue to the hill areas.
Since agriculture is the sole means of livelihood for ninety five per cent of people in the area they are fearing deplorable condition after losing their land.
Formerly, they had to pay revenue to the Dirgheswari temple but later the plot was acquired by the Assam government and since then they have been making regular payment of revenue to the government. But they are yet to get periodic land pattas.
They hold the government responsible for non-receipt of land pattas.
Notably, Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh in a letter to Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on August 13 in 2006 suggested aquiring minimum cultivable areas of land for government projects.
The Assam Government also issued instructions to all district administrations to follow the instructions.
