‘Black Day’ observed on note ban anniversary

The Congress in BJP-ruled Manipur today led nine other political parties in observing Black Day on note ban anniversary decrying the NDA government’s move which they said still has serious impact on the country’s economy and the poor.  

INC, RSP, AIFB, BSP, CPI, NCP, AAP, CPI-M, AITC and JD-S also staged a huge protest rally passing through important roads of Imphal city, as part of the observation.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on this day, November 8, 2016 announced demonitisation of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes then in circulation.

The rally kicked off from Congress Bhawan and culminated at Iboyaima Shanglen, Palace Compound where a meeting was held.

Speakers at the meet said the country is facing severe economic difficulties after the demonitisation by Modi government at the Centre last year.

Participating in the meet, former Congress Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh said the country’s GDP growth has now climbed down to 2 per cent since the demonitisation policy came in India.

He took a dig at Modi over his inability to bring back black money they stashed in foreign countries despite repeated promise.

Several leaders of the ten political parties were present at the meet.

On the other hand, the BJP observed ‘Anti-Black Money Day’ across the country today.

Addressing media at the CM Bungalow, Chief Minister N Biren Singh stated that PM Modi’s bold step of demonitisation was welcomed by people of the country and that the move has affected a lot to those wealthy people who do not pay taxes to the government.

“Those who are protesting against demonitisation are black money hoarders,” Biren said.

He said the demonitisation and implementation of Goods and Services Tax (GST) has benefitted various sectors of the country.  

BJP Mandals also observed the ‘Anti-Black Money Day’ in all districts of the state.

Haipou Jadonang’s 86th death anniversary observed

Freedom fighter Haipu Jadonang was fondly remembered on his 86th death anniversary across Manipur on Tuesday, with many leaders paying homage to him.  Haipou Jadonang (1905-1931) was a spiritual leader and political activist who fought against the British colonialism in Manipur. Rishang Keishing laid to rest

Manipur on Thursday paid homage to former Chief Minister and Congress veteran leader Rishang Keishing at his funeral held at his Mantripukhri private residence here.  Rishang Keishing breathed his last on August 22 at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal. He was 96.  He is survived by his wife Khatingla Keishing, three sons and one daughter.  He was given a proper burial by the state at his residence.
