Folks are busy with the erecting Bhelaghar, a make shift house of bamboo and straw for community feasting and merry making on Saturday night.
Shops and markets in urban and semi urban areas are teeming with the people for last minute shopping.
In the rural areas, the women folks are busy with preparing traditional Assamese sweets and pastries to be served their near and dear ones on the occasion.
People in many areas are locked in an undeclared competition with the Bhela Ghars. “If the people of a tiny place in Nagaon are erecting the Parlaiment House with bamboo and straw a group of villagers in Dhemaji are busy in building the historic Kareng Ghar. That’s the comptition,” Subal Das, a retired school teacher said in Jorhat.

KOKRAJHAR: Security forces claimed to have busted a NDFB(S) camp inside a dense jungle in Kokrajhar on Tuesday. Acting in a tip off, army, police and para military forces conducted a raid inside the Rangapara Reserved Forest near Saraibeel where the make shift camp was discovered. At least 15 rebels were believed to have been camping in it for a couple of days. But they managed to desert it before the crackdown. Police seized some used materials including blanket, knives from the deserted camp.
GUWAHATI:Nishamoni Deka, an accused ACS officer in the APSC scan has been sent to judicial custody on Tuesday after the end of police custody for the ACS officer involved in the APSC dcsm. After the end of her 14 days remand police did not seek her in their remand again. GUWAHATI: The All Assam Students Union leaders and activists are no less upbeat over the publication of the first NRC draft on Sunday midnight. The influential student organization is opening a centre in its headquarters' Swahid Nyash to help the citizens find out their names in the NRC draft.
