Escalating protest in Namrup

NAMRUPSimmering protest erupts in Namrup on Sunday when people thronged in thousands in the heart of the industrial town opposing the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016 that promises Indian citizenship for the Hindu immigrants from the non Muslim neighbours.

 

Led by several influential organizations at Namrup Tiniali, the protesters burnt the effigies of prime minister Narendra Modi, chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal, power minister Tapan Gogoi and rail minister Rajen Gohain alleging their support to the Bill.      

Dibrugarh AASU education secretary Abani Kumar  Gogoi said, “it pains us to see how the Chief minister has been keeping mum who once pledged to detect and deport the outsiders. Isn’t it a case a cheating Assam and its people. If the Bill is passed, we will have to keep seeing how the outsiders would be able to settle here. “

The protesters further shouted slogans against the government for the move to roll out red carpet to the Hindu outsiders and warned the government of dire consequences if the move is not halted.   

Apart from AASU, the protesters  from BVFCL Fertilizer Swarmik Union, BVFCL Fertilizer Workers Union, APL Workers Union, All Assam Yuba Chatra Parishad, Namrup Lekhika Samaruh Samiti, Bihu Huraikhya Committee, Gramya Union Sangha ,  Samanaya Mahila Samiti , Namrup Press and Society Club , Namrup Business Association, Tai Ahom Student Union, AGP Namrup Regional Committee, AGP Yuba Parishad Namrup joined it.

People in the Namrup daily bazar paid their homage to the Pulwama martyrs.  The programme was organsied by daily bazaar shop keepers assoctiation and local people of the area.
The 11 hour Assam bandh called by North East Students Organization ( NESO ) and All Assam Student Union ( AASU ) , supported by many other organizations opposing the Citizenship Amendment Bill 2016 was total in Namrup. The town wore a deserted look as vehicles of all kinds remained off the road. Schools and colleges, shops and markets, banks and offices were seen closed. The bandh supporters burnt tyers at Namrup Sonari Tiniali , BVFCL Main Gate , APL Main Gate and Sarmah Tiniali to stop the movement of vehicles.
The Namrup regional unit of All Assam Student Union ( AASU ) organsied protest against the controversial Citizenship Amendment Bill 2016 by blocking the road and burning tyers at Sonari tiniali. The demonstrators shouted slogans against the state and central governments exibiting play card "Kendriya Government Hai Hai, Raijya Sarkar Murdabad, Mukhyamantri kam nai". More than one hundred AASU activists and local people took part in the protest.
The year long Golden Jubilee of Namrup Sahitya Sabha is coming to an end with various cultural programmes. The programme was inagurated by working president Satrasingh Deuri. Seminar, poetry, cultural night, Book release were part of the event.
Namrup: AASU regional Committee observed the Swahid Divas on Monday with hosting of flag in Namrup Sonari Tiniali Swahid Mandap by regional committee president Kalpajit Gogoi. Assam Jatiyata Badi Yuba chatra Parishad , Namrup Tai Ahom Student Union  ,  Fertiliser Workers Union , Fertiliser  Swarmik Union , Gramya Unnayan Sangha etc and schools  and colleges representative took part in the event.
Polling concluded peacefully in the  three  panchayats - Kachari Pathar, Namrup and Santipur Panchayat - with 75 percent voter turnout. Situation became tense when more than 50 voters were deprived from voting in Santipur.

The largest ancient Hindu festival, dedicated to Lord Surya and Chhathi Maiya (known to be the wife of Surya), Chhath Puja is unique to the states of Bihar, Jharkhand, Eastern Uttar Pradesh and the country of Nepal. It is the only Vedic festival that is dedicated to the Sun God. The festival was celebrated in Namrup and it's neighbouring area with flavours on Tuesday.  
Namrup: There was total bandh in Namrup during the Assam Bandh called by 46 organisations in the state opposing citizenship amendment Bill 2016. Protesters burnt tyres in BVFCL Main Gate,  Sonari Tiniali, Namghar Chariali, Salibasa. Marketing complex, Schools, colleges, Government and private offices, Banks were all closed during the bandh.
