Cop suspended over doctor assault

UDALGURI: Chirang Police suspended a sub inspector rank police officer serving as Officer-in-Charge of Amguri PS in Chirang district after he allegedly assaulted a doctor and two of his accomplices for not wearing masks on Sunday.

According to reports the victims, Dr. Madhurjya Kakati, a doctor serving at  Amteka Mini PHC ,  along with accountant of the MPHC Nitu Das and a pharmacist Raju Boro returned to the quarter of Kakati at Amteka area in Chirang but later ventured out without masks when a police team led by the officer allegedly charged them batons and made them kneel down.

Dr. Kakati told mediapersons "After returning from duty, I lost the keys of my room and hence went out to find it with them. At that moment a police patrol car arrived there and they rebuked me with slang language for not wearing mask. I said them that I am a doctor and just ventured out to find my keys and because of the urgency I missed to wear the mask. I even accepted that I made a mistake. But they forcefully compelled me to  kneel down in public place and then charged batons on us".

Subsequently following a complaint and public condemnation ,SP Chirang suspended Doley on Monday with immediate effect charging him of 'gross misconduct' and 'dereliction of duty' . "During his period of suspension,his headquarter will be at police reserve ,Chirang. He shall draw sustenance allowance admissible as per government norms" the order read.

Earlier,on Monday Junior Doctors Association(JDA) and Guwahati Medical College and Hospital(GMCH) condemned the assault on their alumnus and former member of JDA and decided to observe 'black day' on May 27 by wearing black badges while performing their duty.

The 37th Bn Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) troops stationed at Bholatar B.O.P along the Indo-Bhutan border in Udalguri district recovered two pieces of Elephant tusk and a bi-cycle during routine patrolling near Shuklai river, Dimakuchi in the wee hours of Friday.
