Parag Kumar Das Journalism Award 2023 to Sangeeta Barooah Pisharoty

Sangeeta Barooah Pisharoty, a veteran journalist, will receive the Parag Kumar Das Journalism Award 2023. The award includes a cash prize of Rs 25,000, a citation, and a memento. The award ceremony will take place on May 17.

Sangeeta Barooah Pisharoty currently serves as the National Affairs Editor for the digital news publication 'The Wire.'

The Parag Kumar Das Journalism Award was established to honor the courageous journalist Parag Kumar Das, who lost his life while fighting for the truth. The award recognizes and encourages journalists who tirelessly uncover the truth and bring it to the public.

Durga puja festivity grips Assam as the premier north eastern state is celebrating the annual Hindu festival from Friday. Dressed in traditional attire, devotees from early in the morning started offering pujas to the goddess of strength acorss the state. Many Durga puja committees are holding huge cultural functions in the evening apart from drawing, dancing and music competitions among the children. The authorities have asked the puja committees to install CCTV cameras at the pendal to ensure better safety and security during the festival. The goddess of strength along with her children would be immersed in the river and waterbodies Tuesday.
Prolific writer Arundhati Dutta passed away on Saturday after prolonged cancer ailment. The end came at a hospital in the morning in New Delhi where she was undergoing treatment for the last couple of months. Her husband and noted social activist Deven Dutta was beside her when she breathed her last. Many organizations and individuals have condoled the death of the promising writer who died a premture death and conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family members.
A local court in Lakhimpur remanded Akhil Gogoi to judicial custody for 14 days after the police produced the KMSS leader on Thursday. The Journalists’ Forum Assam (JFA) has urged the Union Information & Broadcasting Minister and the Prasar Bharati Board to introduce a fool-proof system to ensure timely payment to the casual news workers and also introduce strict accountability so that officials responsible for delayed payments get the punishment they deserve. Former Assam Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta had a narrow escape when his convoy met with a road mishap in Golaghat on Saturday.
