Baokhungri Festival 2025 Kicks Off at Baokhungri Hill in Kokrajhar

The 12th edition of the Baokhungri Festival began on Saturday with vibrant celebrations at Baokhungri Hill in Kokrajhar district, drawing a large gathering of visitors and devotees. The three-day event is being organized by the Tourism Department of the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC).

Held annually on the eve of the Bodo New Year—marking the last day of the Choitra month—the festival ushers in the Baisak month, celebrated as Rongjali Bwisagu or Rongali Bihu, with cultural fervor and spiritual significance.

The event was inaugurated by Dharma Narayan Das, Executive Member of the BTC, who opened the main festival entrance, marking the start of a rich cultural showcase.

One of the most sacred elements of the festival is the Baokhungri Hill trek, scheduled for April 14, during Sankranti. Thousands of devotees are expected to climb the hill to offer prayers to Lord Bwrai Bathou, seeking blessings for good health and the fulfillment of wishes.

Throughout the festival, traditional Bodo sports such as Khomlainai (Bodo wrestling), Ghila Gelenai, Dongfang Bukhunai, and Daobo Athing are being held, alongside cycling races and indigenous games that highlight the community’s athletic spirit.

The venue features numerous food stalls offering traditional Bodo delicacies, while cultural performances from various ethnic groups enrich the celebration, reflecting the cultural diversity and harmony of the Bodoland region.

Prominent dignitaries present on the opening day included BTC Executive Members Dabaisa Boro, Ranjit Basumatary, and Dhanajay Basumatary, along with Member of Parliament Rwngwra Narzary and MLA Lawrence Islary.

Beyond cultural celebration, the Baokhungri Festival serves as a platform to preserve indigenous traditions, promote community unity, and boost tourism in the region. Local citizens and organizing committee members are working diligently to ensure the event's smooth execution and grand success.

Sahitya pensioner Chittaranajan hospitalized, face financial suffer

 Bodo community’s greatest novelist,Sahitya Pensioner Chittaranjan Mashahary has been hospitalised due to aillment two-day back at Kokrajhar RNB civil hospital. Mushahary has been suffering from multiple-diseases in his 76 years-old. He also face financial hardship for medical treatment.  Mashahary has been ailing since two-months back and passing the days without food. He has been admitted at Kokrajhar RNB civil hospital on Friday on serious condition. Kokrajhar priest killer held in Dhubri

The Kokrajhar police probing the sensational priest killing case claimed to have arrested the main culprit on Thursday.  Identified asMojinur Islam, he was caught  from Surjyakata under Bilashipara poluce station in Dhubri district. His name surfaced during the interrogation of three other accused involved with murder case.   The priest was killed on September 10 by 2 am at Soni temple near Kokrajhar railway station before looting away ₹ 2.5 lakh in cash from Debnath’s possession. Protest dharna against rape attempt

Many people from greater Chitila area in Fakiragram in Kojrajhar staged protest in front of the police outpost alleging  rape attempt by a local resident on a school girl. According to protestors, a student of the Chitila MV School was faced survived a rape attempt by the chowkidar of the school inside the school building. The incident came to light as the  victim disclosed it.  The accused has been identified as Jonab Ali, chowkidar of Chitila MV School who is absconding after the police registered a case against him.

Rare bird rescued in Kokrajhar

A bird with rare beautiful feather was rescued on Wednesday at Khargaon village in Kokrajhar district.The bird was rescued by Ajit Kumar Brahma at a tree at Khargaon village this afternoon.The bird is saw with rare beautiful feather and long flying spirit structure.Sajal Datta, a nature lover seid the bird is reached from foreign country like Bangladesh or Pakistan.
