Guwahati/New Delhi: The political controversy surrounding alleged overseas assets linked to Himanta Biswa Sarma’s family has deepened, with fresh claims by Congress leader Pawan Khera adding a new layer to an already heated pre-election dispute.
The latest escalation follows earlier allegations—first reported in regional media—that questioned the possible existence of foreign properties and undisclosed assets linked to the Chief Minister’s wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sarma. The issue has since snowballed into a major political flashpoint ahead of the Assam Assembly elections.
In his most recent statements, Khera claimed that “more information has come to light,” suggesting additional details regarding alleged foreign holdings and financial interests may soon emerge. Earlier, he had specifically raised questions about possible property ownership in Dubai and other overseas investments, calling for public disclosure and scrutiny.
The Congress has also alleged that some of these assets may not have been declared in official election filings, framing the issue as one of transparency and compliance with electoral norms.
Alongside property-related claims, the controversy has included allegations about multiple foreign passports, which, if true, could raise legal concerns under Indian citizenship laws.
Strong denial, legal action
Both the Chief Minister and his wife have categorically rejected all allegations, describing them as “malicious” and politically motivated.
Riniki Bhuyan Sarma has gone a step further by filing a police complaint against Khera, accusing him of forgery and spreading false information.
The situation escalated when Assam Police conducted a search at Khera’s Delhi residence in connection with the case, triggering sharp reactions from the Congress, which termed the move a “witch hunt.”
Chief Minister Sarma has also threatened defamation proceedings, asserting that the allegations are baseless and politically timed to influence voters.
Political backdrop
The controversy has emerged in the final phase of campaigning for the Assam Assembly elections, intensifying the already combative atmosphere between the ruling BJP and the opposition Congress.
While the Congress has sought to frame the issue as one of accountability and financial transparency, the BJP has countered by accusing the opposition of running a smear campaign driven by misinformation and electoral desperation.
Continuing developments
With Khera hinting at further disclosures and legal proceedings already underway, the issue is likely to remain a central talking point in the ongoing election campaign. The matter may also see scrutiny beyond the political arena if formal complaints or investigations progress.
