A tragic road accident claimed the life of a daily wage worker early Monday morning at around 6:00 AM on the Merapani–Sarupani Road near the Odalipathar CRPF Camp under Merapani Police Station in Assam’s Golaghat district.
According to initial reports, a speeding dumper allegedly crushed the victim, leaving the body severely mutilated and initially difficult to identify. Village authorities from Chandanpur, including Gaon Pradhan Rajat Chetry, VDP members, and Sarupani GP President Binod Gowala, rushed to the spot to ascertain the identity of the deceased.
The victim was later identified as Chandra Giri (35), son of Basa Giri and a resident of Chandanpur GP under Sarupani, PS Merapani, in Golaghat district. He is survived by his wife and two minor sons aged 10 years and 2 years.
Following the incident, the dumper reportedly attempted to flee the scene. However, local residents chased and intercepted the vehicle, after which the driver allegedly confessed and surrendered before the public. The dumper bearing registration number NL05 G2495, along with its driver Sintu Saikia, has been apprehended by Assam Police.
The incident has once again raised serious concerns over the unchecked movement of speeding dumpers transporting stone chips from stone crushing units across Wokha district along the Assam–Nagaland border areas, particularly through Sishupani and Sarupani GP areas. Local residents have long expressed concern over overloaded dumpers, reckless driving, and the increasing threat posed to people living along the border roads.
The Merapani–Sarupani Road serves as a crucial lifeline connecting people of both Assam and Nagaland. Following the tragedy, residents urged the administration to take immediate and strict measures to regulate the number of dumpers operating on the route, monitor overloading, enforce speed limits, and strengthen road safety mechanisms to prevent further loss of innocent lives.
