Sanjoy Hazarika Bereaved

Minal Hazarika wife of Sanjoy Hazarika, noted author, Journalist and Managing Trustee of Centre for North East Studies and Policy Research (C-NES), passed away on at the Gangaram Hospital, New Delhi on April 3, 2009. She had suffered a stroke at Guwahati on 15 January 2009 and was undergoing treatment at Gangaram Hospital for nearly three months. She was in her fifties and was a well known figure in Assam and in New Delhi. She leaves behind a daughter (Meghna Hazarika) besides her husband. At this hour of grief we pray for the departed soul.

I never knew Mrs. Hazarika personally but I had a telecon with Mr. Hazarika and from what I have read of him and his films I have seen, at this moment my condolences and prayers are with him and his family.

I knew Sanjoy from our St. Edmund's school days in Shillong. Mrs Hazarika's work through C-NES has been an eyeopener for Indians vis-a-vis the North East. This loss is a great setback to propagation of the understanding of the psyche of northeasterners. May her soul rest in peace and may Sanjoy and Meghna have God's blessings to overcome this bereavement.

Border row: Meghalaya villagers threaten to uproot Assam sapling

In yet another string of Assam-Meghalaya boundary row, some villagers in Meghalaya have threaten to uproot thousands of saplings planted by Assam Forest department near near Khanduli.These villagers authorities in Jaintia Hills claim that 25 hectares now under occupied by Assam belongs Meghalaya in the district of Jaintia hills.Additional District Magistrate and the Deputy Superintendent of Police have already visited the area but the situation is tense. Nagaon police books Kamaruddin

Days after the Gauhati Huigh Court identified A Kamaruddin an a Pakistani national who fought the 1996 Assembly poll has been arrested by Nagaon police on Saturday. The arrest was made after the police received instruction from Dispur. Details are awaited.Notably, the Guwahati High Court in a recent 95 page judgment has mentioned that Mohammad Kamaruddin, a Pakistani citizen, had contested the state Assembly elections in 1996. Encounter: ULFA cadre killed in Sivasagar
