Kalaigaon observed World Environment Day
World Environment Day 2009 with the theme “Your planet needs you-unite to combat climate change” has been observed by students, teachers and people, in and around Kalaigaon on June 5 with various programme.It needs mention that UN has sponsored WED to be centrally observed in Mexico City with the aim of planting 7 billion trees on this day, to combat climate change.
ASTEC (Assam Science Technology and Environment Council, Guwahati) has sponsored two programmes in Udalguri district, one at Kalaigaon and the other at Balipara village. Lokapriya Bordoloi Public School, Kalaigaon implemented the first programme at the school campus at Kalaigaon with the plantation of various local medicinal plants by students and teachers. The students and teachers also vowed to take good care of the plants. Essay and painting completions were also arranged on the occasion. A workshop on global warming was also arranged at the school, where speakers highlighted the significances of planting more and more trees.. The meeting was presided over by B.R.Dey, headmaster of the school.
The other ASTEC sponsored programme was implemented at Balipara village ( 10 km from Kalaigaon ) by students & teachers of Balipara Krishak Mukti High School with large participation of the village people. A unique tree plantation competition marked the beginning of the three days programme on June 3,where 400 students from 14 schools covering 10 villages participated to plant more than 200 tree plants under the guidance of noted environmentalist Shahiruddin Ahmed,headmaster of Balipara Krishak Mukti HS and science teacher Salehuddin Ahmed of Balipara. Quiz, painting and essay completions were also arranged on June 4. Another session “exchange views” marked the beginning of the conclusive day on June 5, followed by the open session at 4 pm. D.N.Hazarika,Circle Officer,Harisinga Revenue Circle (Tangla) formally inaugurated the session. The open session which was presided over by social worker Mina Ram Baro was also addressed by environmentalist Jayanta Kumar Das and journalist Rabindra Rabha.All the speakers thanked students and teachers for all the good works done to combat climate change (global warming).
WED was also observed at Sanjouran High School, where students vowed to plant at least 5 trees at their respective houses in next 5 days, there by planting at least 1500 trees. A meeting which was presided over by Dhatu Ram Baro, Asstt .headmaster,Sanjouran HS was addressed by Kamala Baro, Dhireswar Baro Narzi and Naren Baro.
On the other hand Keshab Deka ,MCLA (BTAD)distributed 700 tree plants among teachers and students at Bholabari High School on the occasion of World Environment Day .MCLA Deka appealed all to plant trees in the villages to save this Earth. Keshab Saharia and Sarat Deka also spoke a few words in the meeting presided over by Padma Bhatta,headmaster of Bholabari High School.

Protesting against sharp price rise of essential commodities in the country,more than five hundred people mostly woman staged dharna in front of Kalaigaon Revenue Circle Office today on September 2 at 11 am on the day of Bharat Bandh.The protesters blocked the main gate of Kalaigaon Revenue Circle Office preventing government officials and employees including Additional Deputy Commissioner Udalguri. Police had to arrest all the protesters numbering more than five hundred to clear the entrance.They were taken to Kalaigaon police station campus after their detention for the day.
