We should know more about the award as this kind of aars are given in many times. We need to know more about the award. This can not be any proud momnet for the state. We need to know more about the selection processes and who are the jury and all.
ULFA military chief Paresh Baruah is said to be critically ill. The reported appointment of Raju Baruah, his second in command, as the new head of the organisation’s military wing definitively indicates the seriousness of the situation.
Reports coming in from sources said Baruah contracted multiple illnesses in Myanmar on his way to attend the martyr’s day observed by the organisation. Prime accused in the Parag Das murder case, Mridul Phukan, has been acquitted by the District and Sessions Court, Guwahati, citing lack of evidence. As the accused walked out of the court, human rights organisatons, the media faternity, family and friends of Parag Das termed it as a betrayal by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the court. Parag Das, a prominent journalist and human rights defender was gunned down in broad daylight on May 16, 1996. The verdict came after Das's family, friends and civil society organisations sought justice for 13 long years. CBI is the primary investigating agency in the case.
A team of Guwahati citizens has arrived in Halflong today to study the socio-political problems of NC Hills district. During the mission, the team will interact with a varied section of people of the hills district and try to understand the burning issues. The initiative has been taken following a resolution adopted in a citizen meet held at Guwahati Press Club few days back. The team is supposed to carry the message from the trouble-torn district to the greater section in the society. Led by the cultural activist Loknath Goswami, the team includes IPTA worker Jayanta Gogoi, poet Kamal Kumar Medhi with journalists Nava Thakuria, Anup Sharma, Nituparna Rajbongshi and Prasanta Datta.
A hardcore ULFA rebel was killed at an encounter with police and army in Barpeta district on Thursday. According to information, the encounter took place at Pattacharkuchi on late Thursday night when army and police was running a joint operation in the area. As the operation was on the ULFA rebel started indiscriminate firing at the police and when retaliated by police the miliant was killed on the spot. A pistol was also recovered from his possession.
There has been a steep in the cases of infiltrating from across the Indo-Bangla border if the government ius to be beleived. According to a home ministry statement, till June this year, 991 foreign infiltrators were held along the Indo-Bangla border while 2559 such persons were apprehended last year. In 2007 and 2006, the figures were 4206 and 5130 respectively.
The statement has claimed that the Government has adopted a "multi-pronged approach" to contain cross-border infiltration which includes round the clock surveillance and patrolling on the borders and establishment of observation posts.

The Arunachal Pradesh government has cleared its signal to Oil India Limited for laying a 60 km pipeline to carry gas from Changlang district to Assam. According to Assam, the pipeline will run from Kumchai in Changlang district to Doomduma in Tinsukia district of Assam via Namsai and Mahadevpur. The decision was taken on Thursday followed by a meeting between an OIL team led by General Manager (production) I Bharali and Arunachal Chief Minister Dorjee Khandu. Around 50,000 cubic metre of gas gets wasted every day for want of a pipeline. And once the pipeline is constructed, the border state would also earn revenue.

A dreaded ULFA cadre was captured, two others seriously injured at an encounter with police in Nagaon district on Thursday. According to information, the encounter took place at around 1 in the afternoon in the area at Moukhuti in Deodhar in Nagaon district. The grievously injured rebels have been identified as Razeq Hussain and Imran Hussain. The arrested ULFA cadre has been identified as Chandan Hazarika.
At least 132 persons were arrested for poaching 46 rhinos in Assam since 2006. This was what the government informed Lok Sabha on Wednesday.
Replying to a written question, Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh said nine rhinos were poached in 2006 while 21 and 16 in 2007 and 2008 respectively. He said the estimated population of rhinos in the four different protected areas of Assam was 2,021 of which 2,048 rhinos were found in Kaziranga National Park, followed by Orang National Park, Pobitra Wildlife Sanctuary and five in Manas national Park.
