Naresh Chandra Rajkhowa dies of old age

Veteran journalist Naresh Chandra Rajkhowa breathed his last at his residence at Chandmari in Guwahati at around 8.45 am today. He was 87. He left behind his wife Aparajita Rajkhowa, one son and three daughters and a host of relatives.


Born in Phukan Nagar in Sivsagar district of Assam, Rajkhowa started his career as a sub-editor with The Assam Tribune in 1946. Later he joined the Shillong office of The Assam Tribune in 1951. In 1973 Rajkhowa shifted his base to New Delhi and worked in national newspapers like The Statesman, The Hindu and Enadu in various capacities before retiring in 1983. A senior member and well wishers of the Guwahati Press Club, Rajkhowa was also involved with the Press Council of India as a member. Post retirement, Rajkhowa engaged himself in various activities through several socio cultural organizations. He had been awarded and felicitated by several organizations including Journalist Kamala Saikia Memorial Trust and Leo Advertising.

Assam on Monday received Dr Bhupen Hazarika’s body with all tears two days after the noted singer and lyricist passed away in Mumbai. The entire state gears up to cremate him at the Gauhati University premises on Tuesday. Curfew in Kokrajhar

An indefinite curfew was imposed in Kokrajhar on Sunday following a series of violent incidents on Saturday. The town witnessed violence after a sweet-shop owner Lalchand Badani was killed by unidentified gunmen in the vicinity of Kokrajhar police station on Saturday. Hazarika to be cremated on Tuesday

Assam is well prepared to bid tearful farewell to veteran singer Bhupen Hazarika who passed away in Mumbai on Saturday. The mortal remains would reach Guwahati on Monday morning and would be kept at the Judges’ Field in the city to help the fans pay their last respect to the legend. His body will reach the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport via a Jet Airways flight around 11.30am on Monday. The coffin will be taken to his ancestral home at Nizarapara. The body would be taken for cremation in the afternoon on Tuesday at the Brahmaputra riverbank with full state honour. The decision was taken at the cabinet meeting held on Sunday evening in Dispur.

Dr Bhupen Hazarika no more

Pride of Assam Dr Bhupen Hazarika is no more. He was 85. The end came at 4:30pm on Saturday at the Mumbai-based Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital where he was undergoing treatment. Hazarika was born in 1926, at Sadiya in Assam. He did his Intermediate in Guwahati in 1942, and went on to Banaras Hindu University to complete his B. A and completed his M A in Political Science in 1946. Soon after, he did PhD from Columbia varsity in New Yorkin Mass Communication.
