BJP detractors at cross-roads!

The BJP detractors, the four Members of Assam Legislative Assembly, who defied the party whip during recent Rajya Sabha elections and cast their votes in favor of the candidates of Congress Party, now seem to have facing a tough time to save their political career. They have around them a bitter atmosphere in their constituencies and their high dreams are shattered. Now they have the only alternative to join the Congress Party, for which they are trying their best. The Assembly elections in Assam next year may put them in difficult situation for various reasons. None of the political parties would like to have such ‘salable items’.

It may be mentioned here that four Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLAs, namely, Abhijit Hazarika from Rangapara, Rumi Nath from Barkhola, Sambhu Singh from Ratabari and Kartik Sena Sinha from Patharkandi Assembly constituencies, defied their party’s whip and cast their votes in favor of Congress nominees, allegedly against personal monetary gains. The media had also highlighted their activities. The BJP suspended all these four members from the party for three months pending final decision, which is yet to come out. These leaders are now trying to join the Congress and have anticipated their expulsion from the party.

According to available reports, Abhijit Hazarika, the Rangapara MLA, is now in touch with local Congress leaders at Rangapara. Since he is a sitting MLA from the constituency, he hopes that the Congress would field him as party candidate in the next Assembly elections. On the other hand he has failed to assess the minds of electorate, who had favored him as the member of BJP in the last Assembly polls. It has been learnt that Hazarika has expressed his view, if suspended BJP members of Assembly from Barak Valley are dismissed from the party and join Congress; the BJP would be in much trouble and would lose its base in Barak valley. But according to some BJP sources, the party will be very careful to select its candidates and ‘salable’ members would be scrapped out from the party. This will make the party even stronger in Barak Valley.

On the other hand it is clearly understood from the sources in the Congress, if these ‘salable’ leaders are given much importance; there would be much unrest in the party. The Congress leadership may not consider their candidature on the ground that they supported the party candidates in the Rajya Sabah polls. The idea behind the deals is that they had been already rewarded for the work done by them and there was no need to give them much importance. These detractors from the BJP are now in a fix and waiting to rebuild their career in state politics.

Despite many differences with the sayings and doings of the Chief Minister, Tarun Gogoi, I share at least one of his views on an occasion that the people of Assam are ‘emotional’. He is right, I agree since watching the various affairs through which the state has passed and the CM has succeeded in having the reign of state administration successfully for about one and a half decades. Since the beginning of last phase of 20th century, I recall the memories of Assam agitation against the foreigners issue in the state right from  the year 1979. The students and the general public under the banner of All Assam Students Union (AASU) and Asom Gana Sangram Samiti (AGSS) brought the entire...

Assam Chief Minister, Tarun Gogoi, is perhaps the supreme stalwart in the country, who dared to under-estimate the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi’s dynamism, capability and strength. On most of the occasions, he seems to have challenged PM, Modi in order to prove ‘himself ‘ as better being’ proud’ of ruling the state of Assam for last fourteen years. He claims himself better administrator, because he has gained mastery in dividing the people on different issues, which he has hired from the past British rulers of the country. The simple and humble people of Assam fall prey of the false stories of development without moving out to find the truth about such developments. Those who oppose and...

It is more than six months, when Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) decided to construct four city markets buildings at a time and in a hasty action a ‘mockery of foundation stone’ laying ceremony of four markets were done by nobody else than the Assam Chief Minister, Tarun Gogoi himself at a single place located in densely populated area of Ulubari. The existing Ulubari GMC market had to bear the brunt of damages of the stalls created by the poor traders of the market for the function.
