Social responsibility of media discussed


On the occasion of first annual session of Indian Federation of Working Journalist's Udalguri district unit, a district level seminar was arranged at Kalaigaon College premises on May 16 with day long programme. Several noted journalist of the state namely- Samudragupta Kashyap of Indian Express; Adip Phukan of Adin; Munin Bayan of Dainik Asam; Keshab Kalita of Asom Bani etc attended the workshop, where present day role of journalists and social responsibilities of media were discussed.The days programme had started at 10 am with the hoisting of union flag and homage paying ceremony, conducted by Lohit Chandra Nath,Asstt.Secretary of the reception committee followed by delegate session at 1 pm which was inaugurated by Madhu Medhi,National Executive member of the federation. Maheswar Baro, MLA of Kalaigaon also spoke a few words on the occasion thanking the organisers for arranging the workshop which was also attended by representatives of AASU,ABSU and AJYCP etc. Kami Ram Saharia, president of the receptio committee also addressed the deligates.


Keshab Kalita, president of Assam Union of Working Journalists on the occasion said that news paper owners (except The Assam Tribune group ) were responsible for not implementing various commission's recommendations for the working journalists. He also remarked that the demands of the working journalists failed to make any impact as they had been divided into not less than 15 journalists unions in the state.


A souvenir edited by journalist Tankeswar Barua was released on the occasion by Maheswar Baro,MLA,Kalaigaon after Jagadsh Sarkar,MCLA,BTC had inaugurated the open session at 2 pm. Noted journalist Samudragupta Kashyap of Indian Express while takng part in the open session as the guest of honour,severely criticised the so called new concept of 'Paid News'. According to him people had started loosing faith in both print and electronic media as a few news items lacked social responsibility.According to him such negative reporting could bring chaos in the society.He requested new generation media persons to take utmost care not to disturb peace in the society.According to him failure to carry out social responsibility would double the process of social disintegration. Adip Phukan, Executive Editor of 'Adin 'requested journalists to lead the common people of the society.He also criticised negatine reporting. Munin Bayan,Executive Editor of Dainik Asam also addressed the delegates saying that the concept of social structure had been changing at a very faster rate with the change of time and all print and electronic media persons must be very careful so as to cope up with changing time. Commenting on decentralization of corruption in the state ,he warned people particularly the media persons to keep themselves away from corruption at any cost.ABSU district president Dipen Baro, journalist Namita Bora, Juthika Das ,social workers- Dandi Kumar Baro, Kamal Prasad Sarma etc also attended the seminar.

In a very tragic and barbaric incident, Puspanjali Das (19)wife of Chandan Debnath of Thakuriapara village under Bhergaon sub-division in Udalguri district has been burnt down alive on Saturday noon for non-payment of marriage dowry. The incident has shocked the district. The lady was put in a sac before thrown in a fire lighted in a heap of hay. Puspanjali was married to Chandan just three months bac. Narayan Debnath, father-in-law of Puspanjali has been arrested while trying to flee but all the family members managed to flee before being caught.
