Police Brutality alleged : Elderly Mother of ULFA activist killed in Nalbari

Guwahati : An elderly woman, who happens to be the mother of an ULFA militant died on Saturday evening in Nalbari district allegedly after beaten by a Police and CRPF team when they were searching her house for her underground son.

According to a local villager, a police team followed by CRPF reached Namati village at about
6 PM this evening and cordoned off the house of a ULFA member Bhaskar Rajbongshi alias Bhaskar Kalita. They entered the house forcefully and ransacked it. When they realized that their act was futile they picked up the wife of Bhaskar.

Sabitri Rajbogshi, mother of Bhaskar, tried to stop them calling it an atrocious step on the family. One of the security men hit Sabitri with his rifle back. The sexagenarian lady fell down immediately and died on the spot.

Later local public took the body to the District Magistrate’s (Deputy Commissioner) residence to protest against brutality of police. Seeing the irate mob security personal posted at DC’s residence locked the gate from inside to stop their entry. But some of the m crossed over the gate and opened it by breaking the lock. The mob then entered to office room attached with the residence and put the dead body on a table. Some of them demanded DC’s come out and when refused started ransacking office furniture.

Additional police force on the leadership of an additional superintendent rushed to the spot and lathicharged on the agitating people. The mob was scattered and police forcefully took away the dead body.This again provoked the mob to ransack several vehicle and office building. It was continued till the early morning of Sunday and remained inconclusive.

The public refused to go back without justice and punishment to the guilt.Talking to this reporter at Sunday midnight Additional superintendent of police of Nalbari district informed that the situation was under control According to him, no untoward incident was occurred at Namati village as alleged by the mob.“How can we beat an elderly woman?” he asked. He said, “We had specific information’s about Bhaskars presence in his house on this evening. But he managed to escaper before we reached his residence.We searched his house and picked up his (Bhaskar) wife for questioning. We noticed that the elderly lady was severely ill and very weak. We left their house at about
6 PM. Later we were told that she died at about 9 PM, most probably for the shock of her son in laws detention. Hours later a group of villagers assembled there took the dead body to DC’s residence which forced us to lathi charge on them and took the custody of the dead body for post mortem.’ He informed.Enraged villagers refused to accept his version and termed it to be a cool blood murder to grow fear psychosis among the ULFA cadres.

The scattered mob was loitering here and there in the town till morning. (EoM)
